I'm confused by your question because you seem to contradict yourself - in one post you say you are just looking to calm the K jitters so to speak and in another post you seem to have actual concerns about the quality of your school district. IMO these are two totally different things.
If your concern is solely the former I agree with the other posters - go through the typical motions - open house, new parents meetings, orientation etc. and see if that helps - if not, then maybe talk to your DC's teacher when school starts etc.
If you are concerned with whether this district is the right place for your DD that is entirely different IMO. Are you looking into private schools also? What I would do then is make an appt to take a tour of the school and make it clear that you are trying to decide whether it is the right fit for your DD - find out who would be the person to meet with and ask questions about the K curriculum and beyond - what they are expected to learn coming in and by the end of the year. As a K mom myself I would want to ask if they differentiate in K and also if they are going to be leveling them in reading and teaching them according to their levels and abilities etc. To me this is the where the difference sometimes lies in public vs. private and that is where I would center my questions...

Do the schools around you have tours? I find that's the second best way to learn about a school. First would be word of mouth. Doing tours they take you around, show you the classrooms, gym, cafeteria, etc. You can also pull their school reports and see how they did on tests, etc. Not sure if LI has a grading system like NYC but the grades are based on test scores, teacher satisfaction, parent satisfaction, safety, etc. I like the tours because we were able to enter the classrooms, see the teachers in action, ratio of kids to teacher, see the work on the walls, class room structure, etc. Usually during the tours parents ask all types of questions which can be very informative. We did this for both public and private schools when we were looking for DD and that is how we chose her school.
ETA: Usually the principal and VP are at the tours and available to answer questions. At least that's how it works in NYC not sure about LI. Never heard of a one on one with a principal before registering the kid.

I would do my best to not schedule an appointment like that for fear of being labeled a high maintenance, annoying parent and having my child blacklisted before she even attends the school. They answer a lot of questions at orientation. I know it's stressful sending your first to K, but take a step back. If she's ready for it dont make a big deal out of your own anxiety toward it.

I don't think it's a big deal at all to schedule an appointment with the Principal. Who cares if your labeled high maintenance. Haven't people said over and over, you are your child's only advocate? If she wants to find out about the district, the curriculum, the school, or even how many bathrooms there are, it's her right
