Kindergarten Related, Please Come In

If you were to make an appointment to speak with the principal of the school that your child would be going to for Kindergarten, what questions do you think is important to ask to ease your fears and curiosity?

TIA

Re: Kindergarten Related, Please Come In

What dismissal looks like (classroom, and school as a whole)

What happens when they get off the bus in the morning (especially in the beginning of the year)

Security--how does one enter a building/sign out a child

How much time for lunch---does the buy line take a long time?

Sorry, I cant really think of anything else...this may be bc Im a teacher, so I am familiar with a school routine.

Good luck!

That's a good question!!

I guess it would depend why you set up the appointment in the first place? Is there something on your mind?

Kindergarten Related, Please Come In

Some of my questions were: are there bathrooms in every K room? If not do they do the buddy system. what is the cafeteria structure like. are all Ks together or are they with other grades. how long is lunch. how many lunch monitors and can they assist if the child needs help opening something. is there a K playground or on they on the same playground/same time as older grades. How many monitors are outside watching the kids. I can't think of the rest now but I had alot lol.

Not sure why you are meeting with the principal. But the above are all good questions. Our school does an orientation in the spring. The kids gets a sample of their day and the parents get an orientation. They covered the answers to the above questions as well as discussed fully the schedule of a typical day, it was very informative. Does your district offer that?

Just left a phone message with the principal as I wanted to ease my fears and get some info about their curriculum and procedures and such. Maybe it sounds ridiculous but I want to make sure I'm enrolling my daughter in a district that I will feel satisfied with (we' ve thought of moving).

Thanks

Mostly that I'm not putting my child in a sub par school district. There are several reasons I choose to live in my town at this moment but now that my DD is entering the school system I want to make sure this district is a proper fit for us.

You said you had a lot of questions, did you set up a meeting with the principal prior to your child starting school?

Thanks

I am not really sure if the principal is the best person to ask if the district is "sub par". You might be better off doing your own research and asking those with kids already enrolled in the district.

Of course I wasn't asking the principal that question, but some others.

I think the answers you want would come more honestly from btdt parents.
Chances are, if you're questioning the district you already know all you need to know.

I'm not questioning it per say, I just mostly want to know their procedures in K. I'd feel the same way in any school
district in the beginning.

Thanks for your input.

Kindergarten Related, Please Come In

When deciding on a school-we met with different school's guidance counselors.

they had a ton of info and were so helpful. took us on tours. they were very open re: problems with students, strong points..and negatives.
the biggest negative was parent participation-not so much physically at the school-but making school a priority.
i was concerned with what is done with re kids in class with constant distruptions.

You don't think your questions would be answered at K-orientation? I am sorry, I am just confused as to what you are trying to accomplish.

IDK, maybe you're right and I put a call in foolishly. She did leave me a message today so now I guess I'll have to call her back. I'm just a wreck about sending my little one to "real" school.

Ps. I'm a Kindergarten teacher and I still feel so nervous.

I agree. The OP wants the principal to "calm her fears" but I don't even think she knows what her fears are.

To the OP: I thin you should postpone your meeting till after orientation. If your questions aren't answered at least you'll have a better idea of what they are.

Of course I know what my fears are, they're what most mommies feel who are sending their child off to school for the first time.

Appreciate those who gave me good advice.

I would definitely wait till after orientation to make an appt with the principal (IF you still have so many concerns). Imagine if all parents with "normal fears" asked to have a private meeting with the principal... craziness!

I would ask about the impact the Common Core standards have had, and what is done for kids who don't meet benchmarks. My DD, who I felt was more than ready for kindergarten, was flagged for reading intervention. I was upset, then I learned that over 100 (out of 216) k students get reading intervention because of the higher standards. So I'd want to know what plan the school has in place to supports all of the kids.

Re: Kindergarten Related, Please Come In

I'm confused by your question because you seem to contradict yourself - in one post you say you are just looking to calm the K jitters so to speak and in another post you seem to have actual concerns about the quality of your school district. IMO these are two totally different things.

If your concern is solely the former I agree with the other posters - go through the typical motions - open house, new parents meetings, orientation etc. and see if that helps - if not, then maybe talk to your DC's teacher when school starts etc.

If you are concerned with whether this district is the right place for your DD that is entirely different IMO. Are you looking into private schools also? What I would do then is make an appt to take a tour of the school and make it clear that you are trying to decide whether it is the right fit for your DD - find out who would be the person to meet with and ask questions about the K curriculum and beyond - what they are expected to learn coming in and by the end of the year. I would ask what reading program and math program they use etc. etc. As a K mom myself I would want to ask if they differentiate in K and also if they are going to be leveling them in reading and teaching them according to their levels and abilities etc. To me this is the where the difference sometimes lies in public vs. private and that is where I would center my questions...
