Any Third Grade Moms Out There?

I need to pick your brain......

My DD is in third grade and is learning envisions Math. This homework is (in my opinion) way above what should be expected for a 3rd grader. I feel like these state testings are pushing these children so above their ability. It's so sad to watch my dd come home every night and just stare at this homework.

Here is one example of her homework last night:

Steve and Mike had 40 wheels between bicycles and tricycles. 8 of the wheels were from bicycles. How many tricycles did they have?

Maybe it's me but my dd was introduced to mutiplication and division two weeks ago.

Last year she came home and did her homework in 20 minutes. This year, it takes 1 - 1 1/2 hours each night to do homework.

I feel like so bad for the child who isn't the best at word problems but I feel like this is just a sin to push these children so hard at 8 years old. I don't know maybe it's me.

Thoughts?

I'm a third grade teacher and I teach envision math common core. I have nightmares about it.

I'm sorry your daughter is struggling with it. Most kids are. It's a damn shame. We teachers are doing the best we can to make it more understandable, but the state math exam makes it very tricky. Chat Icon

My daughter is in third grade... levittown school district and is now in a special math program because she is completely INEPT at this years math!!

She was getting grades in the 40s!!

HORRIBLE!

SHe did wonderful last year.

SHe likes the individual attention though. We use Aplusmath for subtraction addition and multiplication... there are games on there that are even fun for me!!

Good luck! it's not just your kid...

My DD is in 3rd grade in a NYC school. They use 'Everyday Math', it is HORRIBLE! She has always done in well in math in the past but this year they teach 3 different methods at the same time and the kids just dont get it. The word problems are much more advanced then the methods they are currently learning. I am scared how much worse it will get from here...

Re: Any Third Grade Moms Out There?

My third grader is usng Envisions and the questions are difficult to comprehend. I had to call my Dad a few times and even he (who is a Mensa member) couldn't get what they were asking. Thank God she's strong in math because otherwise she'd be struggling. Try the local library to see if they offer some afterschool tutoring programs, etc.

My third grader does not get to play at all during the week! So annoying, so much homework. He does two extracurricular activities per week and we can barely fit that in.

My Ds is in 3 rd grade and so far, he is doing well in math. He's had some real tough word problems that I had to help him with though. It's definitely not the math I grew up and learned!

We were told earlier this year that with the shift to to Common Core curriculum, the 3rd graders were well poised to get on track with it, while the 4th and 5th graders will have missed some of the curriculum with the change and now those grades need to play catch up.

Any Third Grade Moms Out There?

That is a question similar to the ones my 2nd grader receives. Not sure the name of his math program but the books are Go Math. He also has about 1 1/2 to two hours of homework per night - it's absolutely ridiculous.

The state education department needs to hear from unhappy parents of struggling children.
