Zumba questions

Was hoping someone can help me. I would like to try a Zumba class on Monday for the first time.

-Will I be totally lost with the moves?

-Do the moves stay the same each class or do they change?

-I get out of breath easily. Is this not for me?

-What happens if you need a break? What is the protocol? march in place, etc?

-What should I bring?

-What am I honestly in for? Is this very intense for someone out of shape as far as cardio?

Thank u all so much.

You'll be fine! The first class can be intimidating but it's a lot of fun. The steps come more easily the more you go because the songs, for the most part, are repeated. I've been doing it for a few years and I still get confused, especially when I go to a class where the instructor is new to me. If you need a break, you can just keep moving. Step side to side or march. I grab water in between songs. I just bring my water bottle.

Have fun! I've been in classes where women in there 60's and 70's just do what they can, so you should be fine!

Re: Zumba questions

It ranges from class to class, honestly! I am in good shape and one of the classes I go to is a challenge for me, and I have been in others that are more easy. For the most part though, Zumba is for everyone! In the class I go to most frequently, there are beginners, older women, men, etc. If you need a break, you can do the moves kind of half-way or march in place.

My class does mostly the same dances each week and during each song, the moves repeat a lot.

The most important thing is to keep moving and have fun. I LOVE Zumba. If it wasn't for Zumba, I would never work out!

I've only been to one. Most of the folks there had been to several. When I needed a break, I stopped and got water. It wasn't too bad honestly. Just do your best. I was only on a one month pass to the gym so couldn't commit to longer. I enjoyed it very much though!

If it's too intense, just slow down. I have to say I've never been in a class that the instructor made me feel like an as*hole for not keeping up. There will always be people that are not regulars and instructors know better. If you don't have that experience (and the class doesn't say intermediate or higher) then I would most definitely complain.

Re: Zumba questions

My advice is don't worry about anyone else. No one is looking at you.
Just do the steps, the hand stuff can come later.
You can totally do it at your own pace.

Re: Zumba questions

I can't answer all of your questions because I have only done Zumba fundraisers and tapes at home...I haven't taken any formal classes.

However, the moves vary...some of them are pretty simple...but with others...by the time I figured out what to do, everyone was on to the next step.

As far as being winded or anything...I am extremely out of shape, and I've done zumba for an hour straight without being winded or anything like that.

The moves tend to be fairly straight forward. Start with your foot work first, then you can incorporate the arms. Most of the moves are used in more then one song so you will become more familiar with the steps as you go. If you need a break, take one. Bring a towel and a water bottle. The intensity really depends on the instructor. I've been to classes that I barely break a sweat, and then I've been o classes that are really high energy and a little more challenging. Either way, go into it with an open mind. Don't be self conscious, and don't stress if it feels like a challenge. Everyone was new at one point, you will get better and more comfortable if you stick with it.
