Re: Having a very hard time
We had similar issues with DS that became very apparent by the age of 2. (He just turned 4).
We started by taking him to a psychologist through our insurance. He observed some things (primarily related to attention/focus/sensory) and encouraged us to pursue an evaluation through the school district, which we have. (BTW, the psychologist said DS was like a kid with a motor that cannot shut off until the battery dies).
Earlier this year, he began receiving services through a SEIT who focuses on behavior. The service was recently increased (he went haywire when we were displaced after Hurricane Sandy) and I suspect he will soon qualify for OT because of some sensory issues that the SEIT picked up on that she feels leads to some of his behavioral stuff.
He tends to be excellent in the school setting, however, he only goes 2 days a week for a couple of hours.
It's very important to note that he also does well with structure when he is super engaged with stuff.
I worry about ADHD/ADD too because I swear DH and some of his family members were never classified, but have learned strategies to deal with it. I think you need to go with your gut and if other people in your family or friends are feeling there is an issue, then you should at least get it checked out.
I deal with one group of people constantly who feel that I am making a big deal out of nothing because he is not "as bad" as other kids they have dealt with in their professional life, so be prepared for that too. (Also combined with the "you need to try a different parenting strategy" or ''give him to me for a week and I'll get him in line" kinda comments).
With the state of the educational system these days, I think it's important to get any child who is facing some kind of struggle, the help they need from an early age.
It may turn out to be nothing, but we pay enough in school taxes, that it's worthwhile to utilize the system if it will help your child in some way.
Going through the school district is a process so be aware of that too.
ETA: Since starting school and having the SEIT in place, and now being back in his regular home environment, DS is doing so much better overall. He still has some work to do, but with the services, he's like a changed boy.
