Nursing Career

I work as an RN in a hospital. I'm studying for my med/surg certificate and also towards my bsn. Eventually I'd like to get into case/care management. Any advice on how to do this?

I can't speak from the nursing perspective, but most of my social work career, has been in some kind of case management capacity.

These days, many of these jobs are now going to RNs.

My major piece of advice would be to look into something that is short-term and/or hospital based.

There really is no incentive IMO to do case management these days in the community, ESPECIALLY for a long-term care program.

Resources are getting slimmer and slimmer and the clients are getting more and more complex. You often are not just working with the client, but the entire family system.
I also know that where I am now, the RNs seem to be really overworked, and even if they are paid a little more, it doesn't seem to be worth it.

I am friendly with one of the RN Director's of Case Management at a major local hospital system, I can ask her if she has any pointers for you if you like.

Personally, for the programs I have worked for, a lot of it comes down to knowing how to write your resume to reflect case management kind of experience.

That would be great. I would really like to learn how to get experience needed to follow this career path. That's a shame about home care but I think all of healthcare is working with the family these days. I know a few nurses who do home care per diem and enjoy it but I guess it's different when that is your main job.
