Honestly my favorite thing is a good Italian hero 
Other than that some homemade things that always seem to go over well are:
sausage and peppers
penne ala vodka or baked ziti
chicken parm or francese
steak or some type of sliced beef
eggplant parm/rollatini
pasta salad
a big green salad/ceasar salad

In the summer, hot dogs and hamburgers still seem to go over well, as "boring" as that seems.
DH likes to get the Bubba burgers.
Of course the other stuff mentioned too.

my favs are:
-Italian hero
-pasta salad
-shrimp oreganata or shimp scampi over rice
-chicken parm
-ravioli ala vodka
-grilled chicken with veggies on top
-stuffed shells with spinach

I make sausage, potato and onion which I prefer to sausage and peppers.
I slice up some potatoes and onion, brown the sausage and throw it all in a glass baking dish and bake for a long time, until the onion potato and sausage are browned and the potatoes soft...so good!
Sausage and peppers is the same deal, it is really the easiest meal to prepare and great for a crowd bc you can make a lot!

favorite dish to eat at an at home party...
For main dishes I really like french dips, spaghetti, nacho and taco bars, sauerkraut and sausage, and steak. For sides or apps I like spinach artichoke dip, cocktail meat balls, shrimp cocktail, veggies and dip, pasta salad, taco salad, and a bruschetta. I really like parties that serve apps more. I would rather have 10 apps to eat and fill up on then a big meal with minimal choices, unless it was a small party and the host was basically cooking to please just the guests KWIM?
