Re: Twins in the same class?

In my son's kindergarten class there is one set of twins (kept together) and one twin (other twin in another class). Originally, both sets were separated but one parent asked they be kept together. Both sets of parents seem happy with their decisions. I think it depends upon your children.

Re: Twins in the same class?

I have twins, but unfortunately one goes to a different school because one has Autism. If he did not...I would NOT want my twins together in the same class. They need their own friends.

Any twins I have ever known have always been separated. I don't think it's fair to have them together to be honest.

Twins in the same class?

My sil and her twin were in the same class every year but one and they hated being apart

they have their own friends and totally different personalities

I think it is a yearly choice that needs to be looked at by the parents and the kids

there are a lot of pluses to keeping identicals together- because if they are always apart you can never see the slight differences to tell them apart and that even though they look the same they can be very different

This is just my opinion but why would you want them to feel dependent on having that other person there. Elementary school is all about independence and learning how to do things by yourself. I understand it increases the child's comfort level because naturally they've always been together but I don't think it's reason enough to keep them together.

My twin girls are finishing up kindergarten now. I feel strongly about keeping them separated. They are very close and become a distraction to each other when they are together. Also, one of my daughters is at a higher reading level. Since they separate the children based on reading levels, they would be very aware of one being at a different level.

Re: Twins in the same class?

I have twins in the class I teach this year. I don't like it. They rarely socialize with the other girls, and there's too much direct competition/comparison.

I am an identical twin. The policy in our elem school was always to separate twins, so when we started K, we were in different classes. We were Miserable. After about two weeks, they put us in the same class, and we were in the same class throughout elem school.

I think it just depends on the kids. Chat Icon

Fraternal twin here. Separated after kindergarten as the school had only one kindergarten class.

I think it's essential for them to be separated. I think they can easily become too dependent on each other & it's unhealthy for the both the more dominant one & the more reserved one. It helps them develop their own friends & develop their own personality outside the influence of each other.

My coworker has identical twins. She kept them together for K and then separated. She said that all the research showed that the parents were the best at making the decision.

In my district some are together, some are apart.

Re: Twins in the same class?

I kept my kids together in K and it was the best thing for them. Their preschool teacher even said she felt they would do better together for their first year. After that they were separated but this was not based on if that was best for them, just because the principal said so. I am not sure if they should be together or not at this point but it bothers me that placement is not made based on what is best but on the fact that they have to have different teachers.

From my research, it really depends on the type of twins and their relationship . My two have been separated for two years now and they still have all the same friends, and truthfully they are each other's best friend no matter how many other friends they have. They also have the same interests and play the same sport.

Identical twins have a special bond that can not be compared to fraternal twins.

Good luck!

Re: Twins in the same class?

I think it is the parents who make the best decisions here, and unless you are a twin or have twins, its hard to understand the bond.

I have fraternal twin girls. They are only in Pre K , but I kept them together and the school...basically everyone gave me a HARD time about it, but I stuck to my guns because "I" know my kids and there are different goals in different years/ages etc and I believe ( hope) I am doing the best thing for them right now.

I do not think what is good for my twins is good for ALL twins, so I really don't think anyone can answer this...because to me it really is a personal decision based on a specific set of kids.
