Heading back to the work force part-time after 6 years

Everyone I know has said to me at some point or another that when I decide to go back to work (when DS is in 1st grade) to get a job with the schools.

My next door neighbor told me that she did it years ago where you get a phone call every morning from the school district asking if you want to work that day and where/what you will be doing.

It sounds perfect for me! How do I get into this? She did it 15 years ago and wasn't sure if it was the same anymore.

Contact HR in your district. I did this for my district but the hours didn't work out. I may do it in september. Are you a certified teacher? These are sub positions, for teachers and aids.

My district website lists non certified positions (cafeteria aid,
Hall monitor, etc). Certified positions for all li districts is on the
OLAS website.

It sounds like your friend was getting calls to sub...is that correct?
If so, you'd need teacher or ATAS certification.

Most, if not all, of the district office jobs are hired off civil service lists.

That's how it was explained to me...hope I got it right!

No, she was definitely not a teacher. She said like cafeteria aide or watching over the playground, stuff like that.

That's all I would be qualified for.

Don't know about school districts but what about looking to work in a group home?

This was probably my favorite job ever because it did not feel like work at all.

The pay is not super but the residents tend to be wonderful.

Many of them are higher functioning so you wouldn't be wiping butts and such.

A lot of these places have flexible schedules or are in need of regular on-call staff (at least that's how it was several years ago).

I know those free job papers they have in the front of the supermarket tend to have listings of agencies hiring for this kind of work.

You really just need a HS diploma, common sense and desire to work with people.
