I feel fat

I want to say Im not fat.... but i feel this way.

My size 12 pants are STARTING to not fit...and I just cant get bigger and buy size 14...I just want to die.

I have gained 20lbs since I have been married. I'm 5'8 so I dont look like I gained a lot....

..but im just blah. I dont eat bad, but I could do better.

I dont really excecize....we have a treadmill but my DH has yet to put it together even though I am begging him to. (we moved about 6 months ago)

I wake up at 7am and get home at 7pm on the weekdays..so I feel blah and unmotivated when I get home. I'm just tired and would rather sit on the couch and do nothing. If *I* dont cook, we dont cook. We order out.

I think what Im asking for is some advice. Words of encouragement. Things I can start with..

The one thing I think I might start on is finding a nutrisionist? Should I look into weight watchers?

I just need some help, advice and encouragement and would appreciate anything you all can give.

I feel fat

Here's how I do it because I work long hours too... I plan 4 meals for the week and go food shopping on Sunday, I have to make the meals because I HATE wasting food. One night is date night, and DH is supposed to cook (BBQ) the other nights, but sometimes I get suckered in. I prep as much as I can on Sundays, so its not as difficult at night. Crockpot meals could be your best friend. Dh goes to work hours after I do, so he usually turns the crockpot on.

As far as exercise goes, I know I need to do it... I get up about 5am everyday so I can fit a workout in and get to work on time. That means I have to go to bed super early. DH hates it, but its a fact of life that I won't give up. Sure, some days I'm lazy and I sleep in, but I would rather watch less tv and go to bed early then feel guilty for not doing anything about how I feel. DH just knows that the time we spend together at night is valued. Also, he offers to help cut veggies and such in the kitchen so the dinner prep goes faster and we get more time together.

Weight watchers is a great program. I personally track what I'm eating on Myfitnesspal, and I have the app on my phone. The WW plan doesn't really fit into my diet, but tracking is still really important and you need to know what you're eating to make smart decisions.

i recommend WW... i do it just online. i plug everything into my app, to keep me on track. i like how there is some flexibility to indulge every once in a while so you don't feel restricted (you get extra weekly points to use if you want). the weight loss hasn't been overnight, but i am almost at my pre pregnancy weight now, and i'm able to wear some of my old summer clothes too! good luck!

eta wanted to add, that the only exercise i have been doing is walking during my lunch hour at work, or on weekends i will take DS out in the stroller.

I appreciate the advice.

I also just bought a food prep thing called Lékué. It looks like it might make a GREAT difference in my life. I feel like I might be able to eat a little more health, and not spend tons of time in prpe. I LOVE cooking, but I am just so tired when I get home, ya know.

I will give you guys a review of my Lékué and let you know how it. But I am VERY optamistic.

Re: I feel fat

Get your treadmill hooked up - tell DH if he wont do it you are going to hire someone to do it...put it near a t.v if possible and just do it...I would say for you during the week it would have to be the mornings as you get home pretty late.

I am not someone who loves to exercise and its a slow process but I started walking / jogging on the treadmill about 7 weeks ago - I do 30 mins about 5/6 days a week...I have lost about 8lbs and I have tons more energy and feel so much better.

DO IT....just do it and you will feel so much better about yourself in one month.

Re: I feel fat

"Fat" is more than a number on the scale or a clothing size. It's a state of mind. I've struggled with negative feelings most of my life. In fact, I was just reading my old diary entries and was (sadly) writing how fat I felt back in 5th grade Chat Icon

One thing that really helped my self-esteem was joining Weight Watchers. I did lose a lot of weight, but even more important was I started to think about myself in a different way. It's not only important to eat right and move ore, your state of thinking is the most important. Weight Watchers meetings really helped me to learn to love myself, flaws and all.

Good luck! Chat Icon

i could have written what you wrote word for word..same size pants and everything! just wanted to say that once you find what works for you it is so worth it.
i joined WW in January and started doing Jillian Michaels DVD's at home (which i thought i would NEVER EVER commit to) but i love them and they have transformed my body. i don't spend hours working out at all with them. just a 1/2 hr before work in the AM-best thing i did.
WW helps you see how much you are really eating!
I have lost 12 lbs and can fit into clothes again and i never want to go back to that yucky feeling i had 6 months ago!
good luck!!

I totally understand how you feel. But I think that if you start doing something, anything, even if there are no results on the scale right away, you psychologically start to feel thinner. I re-committed to WW in January, and before I lost any noticeable amount of weight, I just felt lighter, better, less self-conscious. I think part of it is taking control of that aspect of your life, and the empowerment that comes with it.

I also get how it is totally overwhelming to try to do everything -- shop for healthy foods, cook, get in exercise -- when you are busy, working, have a family to take care of, etc. But my motto is: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." I believe food is a much bigger part of weight loss than exercise (which of course has it's benefits), but if I don't have time to do it all, I put more of my efforts into the nutrition component and work in activity where I can. I also don't beat myself up if I can't cook a full on meal every night. A healthy meal can be a turkey sandwich and an apple or something! Sometimes simple is the way to go, and starting with baby steps is better than doing nothing.

I also try to find 2-3 hours in my week to plan some meals, do all of my food shopping, maybe prep some items, and I feel like that small investment of time makes my week flow so much more smoothly and saves me time in the long run.

It's not easy to deal with weight issues, but it's something that most of us grapple with. I think it's important to find something that you LIKE, in terms of weight loss, so you can stick with it. If you don't like the foods you eat or the exercise you are trying to do, you will be miserable and you probably won't stick with it!

Finally, a friend mentioned the other day how she always felt fat, even when she was much thinner. And she looks at the pictures of herself now, when she wasn't happy with her weight, and realizes how GREAT she looked then, and how she wishes she had enjoyed and appreciated herself instead of criticizing herself then. I think it's human nature to never be happy with our looks and ourselves, no matter what our weight. But I've tried to get better with that, and I think I am more forgiving of myself with age!

Re: I feel fat

Prep food together on Sunday. Freeze it. Take out what you'd like each day and make that on weeknights.

Wake up early to exercise if evenings are out of the question.

Also, there are many workouts that you can do that will be fast and effective.

I am a trainer and willing to help any of you on this board. Send me specifics and I'll always do what I can to help. Maybe there is a park that is close by for many of us. I can meet some of you there and train you :)

Re: I feel fat

Tracy, I would love to take you up on helping with training this summer!

Regarding exercise, you have to find what you love to do. Like many of us, I have joined and quit gyms a bunch of times because I was bored, unmotivated, didn't know what to do, etc.
I joined a kickboxing gym this spring and I'm addicted. When I'm not there, I think about it. I drag myself even when I feel crappy. I always feel amazing when I leave there. I swear, it's like a drug.

That would be great. I wonder what a central location for all of us would be.

Re: I feel fat

I totally get where you are coming from! I would recommend WW. I started last month and lost 6lbs so far. Yes, it probably could have been more if I exercise but like you I just don't want to do a darn thing when I get home from work. The WW meeting are a big help for me because I get alot of great ideas. I'm not sure if you eat alot of carbs (I feel like i'm a carb whore, lol) but limiting them may help as well. I always felt blah after eating alot of carbs. Also if you do the etools for WW, I find them to be a BIG help. I hated writing things down but now with the WW app, I can just enter everything on my phone/ipad. HTH Chat Icon
