What do you let your 7 year olds watch

I really don't like much of what I see on Disney Channel. I just feel the content is too mature for DD, and I don't like that even when there's not "overt" adult discussion/language, that there is still undertones of dating and just ideas that I really don't think she needs to be exposed to at this age. Am I being silly? Are there any shows besides what is on Nick Jr, PBS Kids that are appropriate for this age group? She complains that I make her watch "baby shows".

I don't like the "sassy" nature of Disney channel shows. I feel they send a poor message.

DC likes a lot on the food networkChat Icon so we dvr some of them. We also watched the American Baking Competition over the summer.

DS is 6 and he likes transformers, lego chima, lab rats, and he will watch paw patrol with his sister. eta: He also will watch the cat in the hat with his sister as well.

YES!!! Thank you. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but that is a big part of it. I find them to be too sassy, fresh, and just inappropriate. Ways I would never want my DD to act!

I'm hoping to keep that channel off our tv for as long as possible!

I agree with you about the Disney shows but am probably no help because my seven year old is a boy. He still likes things on PBS Kids and Nick Junior, though, and also How it's Made and HGTV house shows- lol!

This is my complaint with the Disney programs, although I do allow my 7 DD to watch many of the shows.

I agree with all of this.

We like Good Luck Charlie. I always found it done in taste, even with the daughter and her boyfriend, we liked the way it was all presented.

Now the kids are in love with "Jessie" and I hate it. I find her super annoying, not a role model for my kids and the kids are the show I don't like either. Clique is a great word.

I like ANT farm cause its about super smart kids Chat Icon

But I agree we struggle here too. My son is in 1st grade and is done with the 'baby shows' he says.

I LOVE Good Luck Charlie lol and hate most of the other shows. At age 7 I didn't want my DD to watch Disney either but I realized that whether they watch them or not the attitude is also coming from other kids in school. They learn a lot from TV but from other kids as well.

When I was little we either watched Sat morning cartoons, PBS or "adult" sitcoms, some were family oriented and some were not. There was no channel geared towards that middle age group for children!

I only have a 13 month old and I don't let her watch much of anything but what about food network? I love cooking shows and I think some of those, especially baking challenges might be fun and exciting for her. Or HGTV shows where they design rooms or shop for a new home? I feel like these are appropriate for young kids (well most of them) depends on the host and things like that. For more scripted programs- why don't you just find acceptable movies that you two can meet in the middle on? Pick 3, or even 10 different movies and put them on rotation in between the shows she is currently watching.

DD is almost 7 and loves a lot of the Disney Shows. Good Luck Charlie, Jesse, Ant Farm. She just started watching Lab Rats and Kickin It on Disney XD. They are NOT allowed to watch Gravity Falls. VERY inappropriate IMO.

she is not really into anything on Nick Jr anymore.

No iCarly or Victorious. Content too mature.

I held off on iCarly for a long time, b/c I hated how Sam was so negative and nasty.

My boys are still watching cartoons mostly - SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents, TMNT, Barnyard, etc Although DS#2 is 6 and made me record the one about the haunted house.

Re: What do you let your 7 year olds watch

Thanks everybody. I told DD I was going to block Disney, and she nearly lost her mind! Now she's been watching Nick Jr. all day...she really does still like the shows if she'll just watch them. She loves Princess Sophia, The Octonauts, Little Einsteins, etc. If I'm watching HGTV or Food Network, she will watch with me, but never on her own. The other night, we actually settled on Ink Master! Chat Icon After I burned into her brain that she is NOT getting tattoos, she was happy watching the artistry! Oh boy!

Maybe try some shows on Qubo. My DS used to watch the Mysteries of Alfred the Hedgehog but it doesn't appear to be on when we watch (or maybe at all - not sure). But you may find some other shows you can agree on.
