WwyD? (teacher related) - UPdATE in lower post
Me too!
Especially since normally he's so good (not even bragging - and keep in mind that while he's an angel, I pay my dues with my little one !)
I'm waiting to hear he smoked a cig in the boy's bathroom or something 
I gave him another chance. I told him I wrote the teacher a note and that she will tell me what happened. He still says he wasn't sure.
The whole thing is odd. I know he's never afraid to admit when he's done something bad (he has this annoying habit of tattling on himself for just about anything - like if he stole a cookie from the cookie jar) so I'm waiting to hear something major.
I'm not mad at the teacher at all .. Just very curious.

So I found out he had no recess at all. Had to sit out entire time. I wrote a note to teacher for tomorrow. Dying to know what happened .. I just asked for a brief synopsis of what happened and if she could review discipline procedures with me.
I find it weird that there was zero communication from the teacher to you about your child being punished and missing recess!
Me too. That's why I questioned it here. Kindergarten is new to me. He's my first born.. So I only know experiences and general protocol from here. I'm sure this is just the beginning of my LIF questions regarding K and elem school.

I teach 1st and I cover my behavior plan at open house. I have a warning system and if they get 3 I'll take 10 minutes off of recess (at this point). It really is the only "consequence" there is in school. I don't always call parents if they do lose recess because I feel that a. I've explained my discipline plan and b. there child should be able to tell them what they did to have time taken off from recess. But when in doubt, call, email or write.

I can tell you from experience that my son is very well behaved; however, Kindergarten and the structure must have been a huge adjustment period for him. He was misbehaving very badly. I am not saying this is the case with your DS but it couldve been a different story in the way your DS acted that day when he received the punishment. I can tell you when I told people of what my son was doing in school, they were shocked. So far, we have been doing good. I think sending a note was good idea.
In any event, I am curious to see if the punishment fit the crime.

thanks sash! I hear what you're saying.
She wrote back saying he hit a girl when they were on their way to the carpet area, where there are assigned spots to sit in and said that he shouldn't have even been near her at all (based on his assigned spot vs hers).
so I thought 2 things:
1) sounds kind of odd (besides his character, just the setting of how it happened)
2) if he HIT a classmate, I should have been informed immediately
Her response (which was written) sounded kind of weird to me - but I'm not judging - I know they are busy and stuff.
so, I don't know...I trust her discipline and she has to do what she has to do, but something doesn't feel right. but again, this is new territory for me and I better buckle up.
wondering if I should respond and if so, what I should say.
But I am shocked at not getting a call or note if he HIT someone. I had to ask? What if I didn't, you know? then again - I'm not a teacher. I don't know their general protocol if they would call for that.

I agree, I would thank her for her quick response and politely ask if she can inform you if an incident like that occurs again. Add in that you know she is busy but if she can email you if it happens again so you can also address it with your DS and reinforce the rules, yadda yadda.
I would also talk to your DS and see why it happened. And then you can discuss him letting the teacher know or other actions so he wont miss out on recess. My son for the most part would be honest me especially if he knows I know he did something wrong.
I swear I didnt realize how big of an adjustment kindergarten would be for me, nm my DS.

My son's K teacher was horrible at communication last year. If something happened, we found out about it way after the fact. So I started doing check in calls with her every few weeks to see how things were and if there was any issue that we needed to address at home. However, my son is not a great communicator and, even if something happened, he's tell me his day was fine.

In 1st grade another child choked my son on the playground... They were playing around, and I guess the child was "stronger" than he realized but according to my son it made him "cough and unable to breathe"....
The lunch aid informed the teacher but no one informed me!
Imagine your 1st grader coming off the bus, telling you someone CHOKED him and he was unable to BREATHE and knowing NOTHING about what happened? I had to wait almost 24hrs, before I spoke to the teacher to have her confirm/explain....
Im all for parents talking with their kids, but there HAS TO BE communication between parents/teacher; really in every age!!!! Children either exaggerate, or leave important info out or in some cases LIE! They are kids!!!!!
IMO- if your child hit another child or had to be disciplined YOU should've been notified .... I mean, don't these teachers want the parents back up at home????
Sadly, DS is in 3rd grade and all but his Kindergarten teacher (whom if I sent an email responded within the hour!!!!!) have not been communicators..... Its so frustrating as a parent!

What did your DS say when you told him how the teacher responded?
He said he accidentally hit her when trying to get to the area to where they were headed and didn't do it on purpose. Which I believe because that would be unlike him and also because I think if he smacked a classmate, the teacher would have notified me. I think she must have regarded it as an accident due to him rushing over to the area, otherwise I would assume she would tell me, kwim? I still think he was confused at getting in trouble for it (which also led me to think it was an accident).
So that's been it so far. I hear from my son who in his class gets in trouble and the reasons and sometimes it sounds ridiculous but then I keep in mind a few things: kids need some discipline and it must be difficult to wrangle a class of 5 year olds. Also - who knows if the "reasons" are legit and kids tend to screw up stories.
I just told him to always listen and follow the teacher's instructions and not to run around because a classroom is not a playground. All stuff he knows. I have close to zero discipline issues with him at home, so I put this incident to bed. For now. Unless it happens again - but I think this was a fluke.
