We closed in April. How/when do we apply for STAR? Just want to make sure I stay on top of it!

Re: STAR?
You can go to the NY state tax department website. Even homeowners who previously had STAR had to recently re-register. They should have info on there. You should apply now.

Re: STAR?
Agree with above poster, you should receive a mailing for the property but you can go online and complete the form. Takes 3 mins

You should have received a letter in the mail around the first week of the month with a Basic star code and then you can fill out the form online at www.tax.ny.gov-There is probably a way to look up the code if you did not get the letter. You can also call the NYS tax department at (518) 457-2036 if you have questions.

STAR?
I just called the information number because I was also sent paperwork in the mail by my local tax office and I was told that new property owner's should also fill out a registration form for the star exemption for the local tax office in addition to the state form online. Figures NY has to make things difficult.

So strange that we were given conflicting information- The person I spoke to said that the renewal is actually intended for the previous owners but by filling out the form with the code attached to the address the information will be changed to the current owner's name but it does not replace the initial application. I am going to file both-Better safe than sorry. A little paper work is worth insuring I get the tax credit.

STAR?
I just called and since my husband and I just closed on our home in June, we were told only to fill out the paper application. He said the online registration is only for people who received STAR in 2013, which we didn't since the STAR on the home is the previous owners. That is also why when I tried to look up my STAR code, it wasn't there. Just paper application for me!

We closed in April and this is to update the property for the current owner. We were able to update the info and SSN. No surprised there are 3 different answers her but It can't hurt to fill the paper one out.
Online is searching for previous owner and address.
My print out shows address, current owners (DW and I) and ssn's. I don't see what a paper copy would do.
Star is for the property and not so much the owner. The issue is, owners are multiple homes are claiming more then 1 house which is against the rules so this process of name/ssn will rule that out.

The paper copy requires you send "proof" of address they want a copy of your license with the address printed on it or a utility bill. I live in the city of White Plains and I was told by my local tax office this afternoon that they need the proof of residence to show the property is your primary residence or they will not process the tax credit.
