What is your school's policy on calling parents if a child might be feeling sick at school.

I don't know if theres a policy, but the nurse will usually call for a fever or vomiting. If neither, they are encouraged to rest a few minutes on the cot, and try to go back to class. If they come back again, they'll call home and let you know. If you choose at that point, you can come get them or tell the nurse to try and send them back to class again.

Usually if we send them back to the nurse a second time, she will call. Also if the child has no fever but looks bad, she will call. In this case, def seems like she should have called you.

Yes she had red glassy eyes and honstly looks sick. I love her teacher, she is amazing. But I felt bad because she was worried about her. I mean I don't want to be called with every little kid complaint but she has a nasty sounding cough, red glassy eyes and was saying her head hurts ( and apoarently feels dizzy). I would think 2or 3rd visit woukd at least get a heads up or do you want to get her or try to stick it out. Especially when those forehead thermometers are often inaccurate. I admit her head felt cool if not cold but just touching her hand, neck and back felt like they were burning up.

I like them all at her school but just wondered if this was a public school policy ( the nurse at my private school woukd call if the teacher sent you bc they felt you looked sick. But they would still just call and say hey you might want to watch them as they cameb in not well).

Re: what is your school policy on calling parents if possibly sick at school?

My daughter was sent to the nurse in the beginning of the year because she was coughing and congested. She didn't have a fever, so they sent her back to class. The nurse called me to let me know. I think calling the parent is the right thing to do.

My other daughter was stung by a bee, and sent to the nurse. I was called as well.

If a child is in discomfort they may not have a fever, it should be up to the parent to decide if they should pick them up. And gosh if the teacher is sending the child 3x, call the parent !

Hope your daughter feels better soon !

My son has only gone to the nurse twice, and both times she called me.

I know another kid in his class who last year and this year went a lot for every little thing so the nurse used her judgment.

But if the teacher sent her down more than once I would think a phone call is warranted. It should be up to the parent if a child stays in school IMO.

Our nurse has a pretty good gauge of sick/not sick. She called me once because my daughter isn't a kid that usually comes to the nurse & showed up saying she didn't feel well. She didn't bother sending her back to class even though temps were fine, everything else was good.

By the time my mom picked her up & got her home, she was vomiting.

So I think the policy is if the nurse feels it warrants a call, she'll call.

I would think every nurse has their own policy developed after years of dealing with sick kids and kids pretending to be sick!Chat Icon

This happened to me once when I was a kid. I went to the nurse, the nurse sent me back to class, then the gym teacher sent me to the nurse and the nurse sent me back. So the gym teacher actually called my mom to pick me up....i wound up having the flu! the only time in my life!

DS's K teacher told him if he wasnt bleeding or throwing up he had to stay in class, I laughed when I heard this. Our whole house was sick and I could see DS was coming down with something but I sent him to school and told him if he really didnt feel well to go to the nurse. But his teacher told him no. Realistically he was well enough to stay in class.

ETA: Hope your DD feels better

The nurse has called me at the second trip to her office.

Idk if that is the "official" policy. She will say what's going on and leave it up to us. But 2 trips means shes not feeling well so we bring her home.

It's happened twice in 2 years.

Idk if there is a specific policy in my school. But I do know if your DC shoves their arm into the fence to retrieve a rubber band and teachers have to come force it out and it swells.. then you get a call to pick them up.

Yes, my DS this week, lucky me Chat Icon
