What is the policy in your school for calling in sick?

In my school you MUST call in the morning and speak to a person! There is no recording and no way to call the night before!

I find it so annoying because last night I was feeling really sick and KNEW I wouldn't be making it in today, but I still had to set the clock after I was FINALLY asleep (was up a lot of the night) .. so I can call in to tell them I wouldn't be coming. And the part I hate most of all is when you call, they sound Pi$$ed! Almost like they don't believe you!

I really am sick but when I called I still tried to put on my professional voice. I didn't want to call and talk like I really feel because it's just natural for me if it's my job to sound as professional as possible- so maybe he didn't believe me Chat Icon

In any case, what is the policy in your school?

We actually call in and leave a message (your school at least needs an old school answering machine!) and then we try to call our own sub. If you know you are going to be out, tell the secretary the day before and she'll find you one (if you can't find one from home, she will, too)

Before we had the answering system and weren't sure on the reliability of the machine, we'd call the secretary directly and give her a heads-up.

ETA...Feel better! Chat Icon

You ladies are lucky. My principal makes it so that we MUST call up the morning that we will be taking off. It's basically just another way to show his dominance and control all us teachers Chat Icon I deal with this in various forms on a daily basis.

Yes! I have heard of this! For some reason, my lame a$$ school doesn't participate in this! Chat Icon

It's just a known fact that we must call in the morning that we are sick. And, we can't even say that we will be out the next day too (if we area REALLY sick and know we will be out) We still need to call in and tell them that morning.

I think the principal does it this way so we feel intimidated and less inclined to take off. I refuse to feel intimidated, if I am sick, I am taking the day! Unfortunately, I need to set my alarm for 6:30am in order to do it! Chat Icon
