What can cause OHSS?
What causes it? Too many follies or too high of estrogen/hormones? I don't have many follies but they are increasing my meds tonight so wondering if I have anything to worry about.

Re: What can cause OHSS?
The # of follicles in an ovary- estrogen levels can help prevent it or make it less serious. Dr. is changed my triggering protocol in order to prevent it (Lupron shot instead of HCG).

Re: What can cause OHSS?
So my estrogen levels should stay within a range? If it goes too high, what happens? Do they lower meds or just have you trigger with lupron before ER? I want to ask my estrogen levels tomorrow but I am not sure what is normal range. I usually have high estrogen naturally so I'm a bit nervous :/

I think estrogen is typically the main culprit. They will lower your meds if it gets too high - happened to me twice. If they have not said anything, I would not be concerned.

Very true! If they are upping my meds, my estrogen must not be catching up. Thanks ;)

Re: What can cause OHSS?
Either way OHSS won't happen until after your trigger shot. My doctor told me today that since I'm am triggering with Lupron I will need to take Estrace starting the night of my retrieval. These together will prevent OHSS. Your levels now should not be of concern for OHSS but rather as you trigger.
At least this is what I have been told and read on WebMD.

They watch how they are increasing. If it is at an alarming rate, they would change your meds.

Re: What can cause OHSS?
As someone who had OHSS twice I can tell you it that it does not occur until after the eggs are released and you trigger. Estrogen level is a good predictor of ohss and the more eggs you make usually the higher your estrogen level. Each follicle gives off a certain amount of estrogen. Some women are more prone to ohss due to a number of reasons. My meds always started low and stayed low to prevent but sometimes it is very hard to prevent. That being said, if they are increasing your meds, they must have a good feeling you are on the right path and your E2 levels are not getting into the dangerous zone.
I developed ohss the first time with an E2 level over 5000 and we had to freeze all embryos and postpone transfer. 2nd cycle my meds were lowered even more and had half the amount of eggs and a much lower E2 level but still developed ohss because I got my BFP. There are meds they can give after trigger to prevent or decrease symptoms. Good Luck!!!

Re: What can cause OHSS?
She said my estrogen was at 600 yesterday and that was 6 days of max stims so she said she is happy and not worried about me over stimming. I'm hoping that doesn't change. She's not expecting too many more at this point so I think I will be okay.

I'm wondering if mine is too low now lol What would be a normal estrogen level at retrieval time?

Re: What can cause OHSS?
I Think I remember that they like around an estrogen level of 200 per each mature follicle, when that number matches the size and number of follicles you have (along with a bunch of other things that they get paid the big bucks to pay attention too ) is how they determine when to trigger you. Ohss girls mostly seem to have E2 levels well into the thousands.

Re: What can cause OHSS?
I had a lot of eggs each time ~20 so it explains the high estrogen. Being 6 days in, my number was around 1000 already. Your number is not too low - your eggs are growing nicely. Be grateful you are at a decreased risk of ohss.
