If she were the only one at the stop? It's not visible from the house and she is the only person at the stop which is on a fairly busy corner?

She doesn't want me to next year, but I am leary of letting my very pretty young 14 year old wait there alone.

Am i being too overprotective?

that's a tough one! it's one of those things that unless you have a high-schooler you can't say!

on the one hand i say yes, too overprotective. gotta let them go at some point. on the other, i would worry too. can you drive her right before the bus comes and only have her wait a few minutes? is there a window of time that the bus arrives?

I would since it's typically dark when the HS kids get on the bus in the morning around here. I would tell her that her safety trumps the "cool factor".

Could you stay in your car, close enough that you could intervene if anything happened, but far enough away so that the kids already on the bus don't think her mom is with her?

Can you drive her to the school?

Many high schoolers like to get there early for extra help, socialize, study etc.

ETA Many schools offer breakfast before school starts.

I'd wait in my car. You don't want the other kids on the bus to see you at the stop when the bus picks her up.

Are you positive she will be the only one? If so, I would also say go by car to the stop.

I would park in my car so I could watch for any trouble but not embarrass my DD, of course your DD might be having none of it!

Good luck..dreading this stage!Chat Icon

My Ds goes to HS next year. The nearest bus stop is about a 10 minute walk from our house on a main road. I will probably just drive him, because the bus comes so incredibly early since the route is so long, it really doesn't make sense. So my answer is, drive her. Forget the bus, it's more trouble than it's worth!

I have a DS so maybe I'd feel different if it was a girl, but my DS will be walking.

Can't really drive her to school, because I have a younger kid at hime who will be getting ready for middle school. The school is far enough away that it would take me 10 min there and 10 min back. Younger son needs lots of prodding in the am so I wouldnt want to leave him because he's likely just fall back to sleep. But I could go sit in the car while she waits so as not to be seen. I told her the first couple of days she just has to suck it up because I will definitely be walking her there.

I know I'm being slightly overprotective, but a young girl waiting alone at 6:30am to me is an invitation for trouble. I read the news too much. I'm praying that there ends up being someone at the stop so that this won't be a worry. But there is only one boy there now and he graduates in June and really no one else in close enough proximity.

There might be other kids as at my dd's stop, there are about 20 kids. I have NO clue where they all come from as I couldn't tell you where they all live. lol. It will all work out Chat Icon

Drive her to the stop. This way she can wait in the car and just hop out when the bus is coming. No one will see her waiting with you...this way she can be safe and not feel as embarrassed. I see many parents doing this...nice and warmer on cold days too.

I read it too, perhaps its why I'm being paranoid. Being alone is how things happen, especially early in the morning when no one is watching.

Re: Would you walk your high schooler to the bus stop?

can you ask a neighbor if she can wait on their porch if possible, that's what my neighbor does with her middle schooler.

I probably wouldn't walk a high school kid, but we'll see when I have one

Re: Would you walk your high schooler to the bus stop?

I know someone who would not let her 9th grade daughter go to her bus stop by herself. She would stand there with her in the morning and have the grandmother meet her at the bus stop in the afternoon.

the daughter was being teased by the other kids on the bus. So she started gettting off at the stop before or the stop afterwards and walking home by herself anyway. The grandmother never knew which stop she would get off at.

In the mornings, she would purposly miss the bus, so that her mom would have to drive her to school instead.

the daughter did agree to let her mom and grandmother meet her at the stop only when it is raining, snowing or super cold...but that is it.

honestly, i agreed with the daughter. She is a smart girl, who understands how dangerous the world can be. its hard to let go, but to ensure that they are properly ready for the world, we sometimes have to let go and see how they do. So that we can properly teach them when the make mistakes...while we still can and not when its too late and they are away at college

If she will be the only child at the stop, then yes I think I would. I am very anxious about safety. For at least part of the year, it's dark out- my district is huge geographically and there are kids getting on the bus at 6:15-6:30, even at the middle school level.
