Twins - together or separate classes in K?
DD and DS start K in September, and we have an option of putting them in the same class or separating. They are now in the same class in pre-K. My life would be so much easier if they are together, but then most of the other parents of twins I have spoken to prefer their kids are separated. Can you please help me evaluate pros and cons? Anybody knows a set of twins who are/have been in class together? TIA

I personally think that twins should be separated. I think it helps foster independence and takes them out of their comfort zone. That's just my opinion.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
Does your district have a policy? In my DD's school they separate them. But they put them in sister classes. Meaning...the two classes go on field trips the same day, concerts are done together, etc this way parents go to one concert and both kids are together. This year it seems all the twins are in the same two classes. The parents I know had them together in preschool but separate in K on. I thought most districts have a policy on this?

I know some that are together, and some that are separated. The together ones have their own friends, and aren't glued at the hip in class. It's much easier for the parents.

I didn't even think we would have a choice to have them together, but we were told that we do. Like the idea of the sister classes - will get more info on that from our district.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
Growing up, I had twins in my class from K-8. I was friends with them and I don't ever remember there being an issue. It wasn't until HS they were separated.
Most twins I know are in separated classes now, but if I had them I think I would want them together.

This. I don't think it's fair that these children have the crutch of each other when everyone else is forced into independence. Sorry just being honest.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
I am a teacher and a mother of five year old twin girls. The girls were in the same 3 year old program at Park Shore. Then I was told I had to separate them for the universal pre-k in their district and also in kindergarten. I would have loved to have that option.
I personally do not see an issue with keeping them in the same class for kindergarten. I would of liked for the girls to be in the same class. They are Nov. babies and young for their age and have had terrible separation anxiety (Aubrey has) in the beginning of the year. It is a full day and by lunch time Aubrey would get very emotional. I know you have to separate at some point. However, I don't think Aubrey was ready yet. I think if I waited a year she would have had a better handle on her emotions.
I don't think you can generalize that all twins should be separated. You have to evaluate the child. My girls have always developed their own friends and are individuals. They did not have to be separated in Kindergarten for that.
I think you should evaluate your children and see what is in the best interest of them.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
My twins are in separate classes but that's because their educational needs are different. However, in their school, many of the twins are together. My one daughter has b/g twins in her class. Personally, I think it truly depends on the children. There shouldn't be a blanket way of doing things.
As a teacher, I had twin boys in my class, when I taught 3rd grade. And another set of twins that weren't together but constantly found each other so it felt as if they were lol. In fact, I am 'friends' with them on facebook now, and I sometimes can't recall which one was actually in my class. They are best friends, and are in the same nursing program together. (they are in their 20's now).
Go with your gut !

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
I have identical twin boys and they were in the same K class and then separate after that.
For them this was the best thing. They would walk into preschool and go do different things but once one was not their the other was hyper focused on their brother not being there. They both did this. Putting them together was great for them the first year. It did not create any issues as far as independence, I just had the teacher not sit them at the same table, and she never paired them together.
It was too much change if they had started taking the bus, going to school full day and being separated.
There are 3 other sets of twins in their grade and they were all in different classes, but mine were the only identical set.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
My twins are in the same class in pre-k right now but will be separate for K. I think for them its the best thing, my DS tends to sit back and let my DD always do things for him and I want them to each learn their own way.

Re: Twins - together or separate classes in K?
I think each situatino is different and a blanket rule can't be made.
I am an identical twin. 30 years ago, our district had a rule that all twins be in separate classes. So, we started in different classes....it lasted for a week or two....we were MISERABLE, and so were my parents! We weren't glued to each other. We just liked to be together. I think there is nothing wrong with it.
We are sisters, we are close. It did not hinder us AT ALL.
It just depends on the kids!
