Dropped from State Farm

Well I guess it was only a matter of time......we were victims of Sandy.

Got the letter today that as of March, they're dropping us.

Anyone else?

And can you recommend an insurance broker to talk to?

Technically we're not in "the flood zone" but we're considered in a "catastrophe prone area" so that's why they're dropping us.

We also purchased flood insurance with them post-Sandy so I'm sure that's gonna be affected too.

State Farm just dropped my brother in Valley Stream. They're considered flood zone even though they shouldn't be.

I recommend Matt Salerno. He has been very helpful to me and is a great resource for harder-to-insure properties.

Re: Dropped from State Farm

Thanks ladies. Between here and my local FB moms group, I feel much more at ease with getting this resolved.

Also, when my parents (in South Seaford) were dropped from State Farm a few years ago, they got a policy through Occidental (I think a subdivision of Geico). Just another option!

We were also dropped from State Farm after Sandy. We were flooded. We got insurance through All State.

Insurance companies are so weird. We had All State initially. In 2006, they dropped us because they said we are a coastal property (we are at least a mile from the bay and there are no other bodies of water around us). State Farm picked us up. We are in the process of going into contract on our home and the buyers told us that State Farm won't issue them the policy. We have never had any water damage. I find it bizarre that All State will pick you up now with the knowledge you had damage. I don't get how they decide who they will/will not insure. Weird. I digress.

I have heard that Naragansett Bay will write policies for reasonable rates from our waterfront friends.

Re: Dropped from State Farm

How long does it take to hear back?

I've contacted some people from here and another site and they say they will absolutely get back to me but that was a week ago.

I also got a call from our current broker on Friday to call him Monday because he thinks he can help still?

I'm guessing agents are overwhelmed right now but I'm getting nervous since March is right around the corner......

Is it better to just walk in somewhere?

If you need help obtaining insurance, I would be happy to help. I give a 24 hour turn around time for all quotes. Please message me :)

Re: Dropped from State Farm

State Farm also dropped us after Sandy. We are in a flood zone so require ins. We ended up going with Narragansett Bay Ins. because they offered the lowest quote - I think their hurricane deductible is $1 or 5K (can't recall).

Here is their web site:

Re: Dropped from State Farm

Heads up. has nothing to do with being in a flood zone. Flooding is not covered under a homeowners policy. That is what FEMA is for.

It has to do with being 'coastal" so yes being within a proximity to water. Why?
Because being near the water during a hurricane or severe storm causes high winds and more damage to those more inland.

We have a separate flood insurance policy.

We've already accessed FEMA funds.

I spoke with the broker on here today who was very helpful too.
