Ok, I hope this is not too much TMI but have any of you gotten a fungus from a nail salon? What did you do about it?

Re: Nail Salon cleanliness
Yep. In my big toenail. My podiatrist told me that no matter how well they wash those basins, and even if you bring your own tools, the issue is the bacteria and fungus live in the jets of those jetted basins and you can't clean those properly ever. He suggested no salon pedis at all or to find a place that just soaks your feet in a basin without that whirlpool effect and those jets. It's very hard to find that kind of place though. I would imagine more of a day spa type place maybe. But I just do my own toes now.
There are prescriptions out there, but what worked for me was soaking it in vinegar and water every night and then putting Vicks (the stuff you put on your chest) on the toenail before bed and sleeping with a sock on. Both of those are known to naturally kill fungus. It worked but it took a LONG time because the fungused nail has to grow out.
I also heard that Listerine works- soaking your foot in that. If you google natural fungus cures you will see all of these.

Yes, my big toe too. Thanks for the suggestions - I'm going to give them a try. The nail has already fell off, I just don't want it to spread.

If the nail is off, it will be even easier to treat with the vinegar and the vicks. This way you can get it right on the fungus without having to worry about getting it under the nail, etc. If you don't' want to soak in the vinegar, you can soak a cotton ball in vinegar and put that on the toe and wrap it in foil to keep it on.

Yup I had same thing in 2001 on big toe. I went to podiatrist and he gave me a rx lotion/cream to use for 3 mos. I very rarely get my nails done anymore. So gross.

Never happened to me but that's why I refuse to go to nail salons. It's just not sanitary no matter how clean they look

ITA. I got an infection in my big toe nail once and stopped going after that. Never ever again. What scared me was when the foot dr told me he might have to REMOVE my toenail. NO THANK YOU. No more pedicures for me. Luckily the infection cleared up with abx.

This is terrible -- I go to a place that uses those plastic liners...but im not sure what happens with the jets. I cant remember. Does anyone know if those liners actually help?

The problem is not the tub though, it's the jets. It's impossible to clean them and the fungus can live in their and gets jetted out into the tub- so whether they sanitize the heck out of the tub or they put a plastic liner, it doesn't much help.
