How bad is it to border a High School?
How bad is it for backyard to border a high school?
High fence for fields which is a bit of an eye sore - could plant some bushes, but would still see fence.
Noise? Resale?
Other concerns?
Obviously not ideal but curious what the general public feels - be honest

How bad is it to border a High School?
IMO, I wouldn't buy bordering a school. Probably sounds silly, but a high school especially. A few things I can think of:
1) Some juniors and most seniors drive (and drive poorly). I teach high school and year after year there are numerous accidents, especially in this icy/snowy weather, where students hit the cars of faculty members. I would be concerned about a higher than normal number of new drivers in the immediate area. 2) Noise/litter. High school athletic fields are notorious late night hang out spots for students and there is often alcohol/drugs involved. When I was in high school, we hung out at our HS and many of my friends often threw their beer cans/bottles over the fences of neighboring houses. 3) If you are super close to the fields, sporting events will be loud -- for example, in the fall and spring months, the field will be in use both after school for practices and early morning/afternoon on Saturdays for games. Using a football game as the example, there is often a half time show which includes a marching band playing. 4) I think its proximity to a school would absolutely hurt re-sale value and make it more difficult to sell.

Never, ever-the noise is part of it but I would also worry about property damage/destruction, littering, partying on the fields after hours and weekend sporting events disrupting your ability to enjoy your yard on the weekends.

How bad is it to border a High School?
My friends backyard is a high school. It's awful. Not just noise - kids hanging out in her street - groups of them. Her cars have been broken into a lot. Crazy teen drivers on her street. One time a student stole a bag and hopped over her fence and ran thru her yard.
I wouldn't advise it.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. We bought on a street that goes to a town park and see a lot of what is described in the warmer months. I would imagine it would be worse at the school.

Just the noise alone would have me looking elsewhere.

In general it will be very poor for resale. There are limited buyers who will even consider that home. That begin said, if it's a great deal and maybe the only way you can get into a desired neighborhood or area, and you think it's worth the negatives that will come with it, then only you can decide if you want to consider it.
For me it's a deal breaker though and for most it would be as well. But there is someone for every home.

Re: How bad is it to border a High School?
Thanks for honesty.
I grew up in a not so good area, not near a high school - never went to any football games or anything like that.
DH says there could be 1,000+ people at a weekend high school football game - I was
I had no idea. I never was around my high school for a min longer than needed.
While this is a good area and I don't think there will be a lot of riff raff, kids will be kids.

Re: How bad is it to border a High School?
Thinking about the HS that I attended (cardozo in queens) I was going to reply that I wouldn't mind at all. We couldn't wait to get off of school property & I have never seen or heard of things happening to houses or cars that people mentioned above. I guess it's different in other areas. I change my answer to no based on reading the above responses.

We are a few blocks away from the high school and hear the sporting events. I wouldn't want to be that close especially if you have you ng children that need to nap / sleep and the games are going on. Plus parking and traffic suck by the school.

Growing up I lived 2 blocks from my elementary school. My bedroom was upstairs I could always hear the soccer games, the blowing of whistles, people yelling. Although It always reminded me spring was coming.

My best friends house borders a hs! Omg the traffic is horrible every day. They block her driveway everyday. When they have football games it is so loud. They are always cleaning up trash the kids leave all over. I really wouldn't want to live there.

I knew someone who was next to a high school. She couldn't park in front of her own house because they had put up so many No Parking signs to discourage students from parking there.

I think it depends on where the high school is. The high school in my area has no houses by it's entrance so there would be no issue with traffic or parking. The houses that back the high school are behind all the fields and then there is a woods buffer so it may be loud during a football or soccer game but that is not all the time. I looked at a few condos backing our high school and there were no issues.
