How clean...

Do we need to leave our rental apartment when we move out? We will of course sweep/swifter the floors and wipe down counter tops etc. but do we need to do more like clean the oven, clean the refrigerator shelves, plaster up holes in the wall from hanging pictures?
We obviously want our security deposit back which is why I'm asking

Leave it the way it was when you moved in and you should be fine.

How clean...

I would read your lease and/or check with the management company. Our last apartment we had to do more cleanup than we've had to do in the past. Our lease specifically said we had to clean the stove and replace the drop pans under the coils but we did not have to plaster any wall holes or get the carpets professionally cleaned. Point being I think it varies from place to place and I wouldn't want any surprises when it comes to getting back my security deposit.

This and I would definitely clean the refrigerator & oven, that would be gross to leave.

I would be mortified to leave it in the same condition we got it....the apt was gross! There was tomato sauce up along the wall next to the stove and on the ceiling. There was rice and food crumbs in the cabinets. The floors were gross, the shower was moldy...

Usually they want it "swept clean". We vacuum and make sure everything is thrown out. We'll clean out the refrig but and do a normal cleaning after everything is out. We will not clean the oven unless it is really dirty (I don't use the oven often). They are tearing out my apartment and replacing everything when we move so I'm not going to crazy.

When we bought our house and moved out of our apartment complex, I actually paid my BIL's little brother $150 to clean once everything had been moved out. Basically, vacuuming, scrubbing the bathroom and kitchen.

It was pretty squeaky clean, save the normal wear and tear to the carpet, walls.

They tried coming after us for paint and carpet cleaning, but we told them to take a hike.

That's really weird. It's typical for the building to get a cleaning service in if the apt was left in such bad condition - and then the previous tenants would be charged for that. But seeing as though that didn't happen for you, I'd just give a good cleaning and you should be fine. Take pics when you move out if you're worried about not getting your full security deposit back.

Re: How clean...

I recommend taking pics too. Our LL kept like $500 of our SD claiming we left the apartment a mess. Since we had just moved to a new home and I expected her to keep something, I didn't argue at the time. Looking back though it kind of pisses me off.

Check your lease agreement. When we had an apt. it stated in the lease agreement that the landlord would take $100 from the security deposit to clean the apt. We failed to read that, cleaned the place top to bottom and the jerk still took the $100.
