Cohen's: UPDATE

So I finally have DS first appt there on Thursday in Dev/Behavioral pediatrics. What should I expect at the first appt? How long will we probably be there for? I took the day off work, but DH is also joining me. He also has another appt. scheduled for 2 weeks later. This is the Marcus Ave. location.

Is it similar to when I initially went through the provider through CPSE?

He met with speech one day, psychology and OT the second.

He was also observed by a private psychologist a few times.

----------------------

So we met with the developmental doctor today and she was great.

Very down to earth.

She already made a few recs such as using melatonin and getting iron testing.

I also figured out this is the same place my nieces used because they were preemies so that makes sense to about the insane wait times.

I'm happy that I final went and we go back in 2 weeks with the rest of the paperwork needed.

what doctor are you going to see? What is the purpose of the appointment? my intial appointment with the dev. pediatrician was not at all what I expected. not an evaluation really at all...more of a observe DS in a small office and talk about my concerns.

Cohen's: What should I expect?

Is it your intital intake? They probably won't do much. They will talk to you about what the issues are, what your hoping for, observe your child for a bit while he's there with you and discuss what evaluations you want. They will most likely give you a ton of packets to have filled out by you and his teachers. Did they ask you to bring in his IEP goals and progress reports and evaluations? You will need all of that.

We want to follow up on behavior/anxiety and concerns for ADD/ADHD. They didn't tell me he needs to bring anything. He also is currently only receiving OT through CPSE and will be graduating from that at end of school year.

I am glad you had a good experience. I just took my son to a Developmental Pediatrician, not the one you went to, because they were booked until September...(although they were on the list my ped gave to me) but a doctor in Babylon that my ped also recommended to me. Originally I had the appt set up for June but they had a last min cancellation. Unfortunately, I felt like it was a waste of my time. We waited 1.5 hours to see her (my DS was off the walls at that point, hungry and ready for his nap), and she basically just told me "well his diagnosis could go either way."

If you can set up the appt, anyway so at least you have it if needed.

Re: Cohen's: UPDATE

They deal with everything from developmental to behavioral/psych.

We suspect ADD/ADHD which is why we are going this route. They have a great program for this.

When I called they turned me away when I asked for an appt. for behavioral issues.

Re: Cohen's: UPDATE

How old is your child? They initially turned me away too when I called when DS was 4. But now that he's 5 and will be in full day kindergarten next year, that may have made the difference.

Don't get discouraged.

It takes forever to get an appt. And I work for the health system and tried to use that card and it still didn't matter.

I know some of the ladies on here said it gets easier once you are an established patient.

You should have asked here, most people don't like her at all! I don't even know how she is still practicing. She is a total joke!

I agree, Silverman is awful. I ran out of there but in other special needs forums she is absolutely loved. That is why it is so important to find doctor/therapists that you mesh well if and if you don't, find another!
