Who do I make an appt with?
I had DS evaluated for services in the fall, but did not qualify due to extremely high test scores. After speaking to his pre-k teacher for an hour tonight, I'm going to call a different doctor. What kind of doctor do I call - a neurologist or a developmental ped? He has ADHD and OCD tendencies with a lot of sensory issues coupled with anxiety. Thank you!!

I just began the process with a developmental Ped at Cohen's. The wait time sucks but so far I am super pleased with the doctor. DS has very similar issues. We are concerned about what's going to come out next year in full day kindergarten because he doesn't do well in the afternoon into evening. I also am in a very diverse school district, and not that I am bothered by that overall, but I want to ensure that DS doesn't fall behind because some of his teachers may have bigger fish to fry with some of his peers.

It might help to know where you are located. Cohens can be far if you're way out in Suffolk.

Thanks so much for your response. I have seen many of your posts and I often feel that your DS and mine have many of the same issues. I also live in a diverse school district and at the CPSE meeting, it lasted two minutes and they said "Your son is is extremely gifted. We have much bigger problems in this district than your son" and they laughed. I was so upset!! He's going to Catholic school next year, so I wanted to at least get the ball rolling. Thanks!!

I personally would see a neuro for ADHD issues. We went to Pediatric Specialty Care affiliated with Good Sam, and saw Dr. D. She is great IMO. Very thorough, did a lot of tests, gave us a lot of answers regarding different things.

Also note that they have a special ADHD program through Cohens which is our other reason for going that route. ETA: I believe they have a location in Commack as well.

I would recommend a neuropsychological evaluation, that is what is going to pinpoint areas of strength and weakness. In addition, to an OT evaluation.
Your child could be twice exceptional, meaning 'gifted (high IQ) and special needs". No school committee member should have ever said those words to you, That is extremely unprofessional !
A neuropsych is going to have more weight with a school district, then any medical doctor. However, if you are going to private school, it can be difficult to get adequate support from a district that already seems to have shut your child out. If you are looking for medication etc, then perhaps a neurologist or even a psychiatrist can assist.

Also if I'm going the neuro route, what do I say when I'm calling? He has a number of sensory issues/short attention span, etc.

When I called I said his teacher suggested getting him evaluated because he was a distraction in class. I never knew what to say so I said that. Good luck!

For sensory issues and ADHD, an occupational therapy eval. would be crucial. Was he evaluated by an OT? Usually, unless you request it, the district just does the cognitive and speech evals.
Finally, I am assuming your child is going into K in september... if he still doesn't qualify for services, he may be able to get a Section 504 plan for his ADHD and anxiety which would provide him with support and accommodations, but not specialized instruction or services.

When we had him evaluated, he got an OT, speech, and psychological eval. A special Ed teacher also came with the OT. That's exactly what I want - a 504. With him going into kindergarten, I really just want things like redirection and when he gets older, test read, separate location, etc. who knows - he might mature and not even need that later, but, going with my gut, this is more than just the normal hyperness. I feel like its a lot of little things, not necessarily one big thing. We shall see. I'm looking forward to his neurologist appt next week! I was actually thinking of canceling it and waiting til he's older but I figured I'd rather become an established patient so it's easier once we see how he does in school in the fall. Thanks for your input!
