IUI w/ HCG shot vs IUI using OPKs
I've had 3 HCG shots so far but never an IUI, just timed intercourse. MY HCG shots are given to me on either CD 11 or 12. However, when I don't do the HCG shot, I get my surge on CD 11 or 12 anyway. So I really wonder if there is any point in me doing the HCG shot. Plus going in for the HCG shot is very time consuming. I end up taking several hours off from work and sometimes, I end up having to go to the RE twice in one cycle if I'm not ready on CD 11.
I want to do an IUI soon. Is there any benefit of doing it with the HCG shot vs using OPKs. I am wondering if can just schedule the IUI once I get a surge.
I should add that I am not on any drugs, so these are all natural cycles.

You're going to have to go to the RE more than twice for an iui cycle. You can't just schedule one. There's monitoring involved.

Agree with the above poster. If you are going to have an IUI at RE office, it would be mandatory for them to monitor you -- they won't just trust you tracking yourself with OPK at home. I usually ovulate on CD15, and start going in for monitoring on CD10/11. Each morning they draw blood and do a sonogram. On some cycles, I've had to go in everyday CD10/11 up until the day I had the IUI procedure, other cycles I skipped a day or so in between based on the blood/sono results.

I was told that the HCG shot ensures that all your eggs are released at ovulation. If you have 4 embryos....,natural ovulation may only release one, where as the HCG shot will cause your body to release all 4 increasing your odds of conception....

The packet I received from Cornell says that if you are doing a nature cycle, you can schedule an IUI once you get a positive on an OPK. It says to make sure you test before 2 pm and call Cornell that day.

If you are not on any meds then I would ask your RE's office to see if this is a possibility. I was on clomid so I had to be monitored.

Personally, this would make me nervous. Why would you not want to be monitored? It's possible to get a surge and not even have follicles developing, I honestly would want to be monitored by an RE to check follicle growth and size, etc prior to having an IUI. You just never know what's going on unless they check. Plus, do you have unlimited iui coverage? That's something to consider.
