Saw this in an article online about the Shutterfly email:
Shutterfly wouldn’t give specifics on how they identify which of their users have new babies, and how this particular email wound up missing the mark. Did they buy or make a bad data broker list? Or did they just send this email to the wrong list? Shutterfly did release an apology. “Earlier this morning, we unintentionally sent out an e-mail in error to some of our customers. We deeply apologize for this intrusion and any offense this may have caused,” says spokesperson Nicole Stier. “The intent of the email was to target customers who have recently had a baby and may be interested in using our products to commemorate that life event. It was unintentionally sent to a larger base.”
Lame. I didn't use Shutterfly often, but I don't foresee myself ever using them again. Perhaps a retraction/apology email should have been sent to that "larger base." Idiots.
That's the best they could do? I'm done with them.

If you're comfortable doing so, can you suggest to them that instead of just "deeply apologizing" for their idiotic marketing strategy, that they actually do something to try to make it right -- i.e. making donation(s) to infertility research groups.
I'd do it, but I'm not on twitter and I'm not really expecting a response to my email.

Re: Shutterfly email
I just got this response from customer service:
Thank you for contacting Shutterfly.
We were informed on this error this morning and sincerely apologize for you receiving this email. Earlier this morning, we unintentionally sent an e-mail to some of our customers. We deeply apologize for this intrusion and any offense this may have caused. Our intention was to target customers who have recently purchased birth announcements with us, and it was sent to a larger distribution in error. We have escalate the issue to our marketing team so that they will take immense care not to repeat these kind of mistakes. Once again our sincere apologies for this error.
We thank you for choosing Shutterfly. Please let us know if we can offer any additional information.
And this is what I sent back:
While I appreciate that you responded to my e-mail, simply stating that you apologize does nothing to overcome your grievous error. Quite frankly, Shutterfly should do something to actually rectify the harm and hurt that has been caused, such as by making a donation to an infertility research group. Actions speak far louder than words . . . and some action really needs to be taken to address this.
Your former customer,

Re: Shutterfly email
I got it too. I wonder if it was just sent to everyone or they pulled our data somehow and just missed the mark on our obsessing (which is scary that companies can do that).
For a while DH was getting pregnancy magazines , formula samples , coupons, etc for expecting moms. That was a low blow too and we still have no idea how he got on that list.

That's BS. How would they know who had a baby? They messed up and are trying to clean up. I was pretty shocked when I saw it myself. I thought of everyone struggling with fertility.

Re: Shutterfly email
This reminds me of my first pregnancy when I set up a registry (at 14wks...thought I was safe and I was excited..) Well, that must have put my name on mailing lists because a few weeks before my due date, I was home and too sad to leave the house. Finally I did, and found a formula sample from Enfamil on my doorstep.
Eta- I posted about it Click here

OMG i got it too. I thought someone hacked into my account, so I went on to check it to be sure. It was either a sick joke or hopefully a sign of hope.

I also got the apology email. I am glad they addressed it, but still it would have been nice to donate to an IF cause like the PP stated.

Re: Shutterfly email
This is what I got!
Please accept our most sincere apologies. We mistakenly sent an email that was intended only for new parents who recently made baby-related purchases at Shutterfly. We’re truly sorry if you received this email in error. We realize this is a very sensitive issue and we did not mean to upset you in any way. We care about our customers above all else and have taken measures to ensure this will not happen again. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you. Sincerely, John Boris Chief Marketing Officer Shutterfly, Inc.

Re: Shutterfly email
I don't want to , but I just got this email in response to my suggestion that they make a donation to an infertility research group in order to actually address the harm they caused. I doubt it will go anywhere, but at least they responded. I never did get the "official" apology email, though.
Dear Megan,
Thank you for your response.
We deeply apologize again for the error and we appreciate your feedback on the situation. That is a great suggestion and I will send that information to our team.
Please let us know if we can further assist you.
Thank you again for contacting Shutterfly.
