sort of awkward? Final update below!
I am in the process of looking for a new job. DH is an Assistant Troop Leader for my SS's Boy Scout Troop and mentioned to one of the other guys that I was looking. Turns out there is an opening in the guys company that I may be qualified for - YAY! So, I have an interview there next Wednesday. Before the interview was scheduled, we planned a BBQ for all the Boy Scout families - for next Saturday (a few days after the interview). The guy that DH knows will be part of the interview and will be at the BBQ. If I got the job, I would be working directly for/with him. I have met him only very briefly - quick introduction type of thing. I don't expect the interview process for the company to be completed by Sat. but I'm just a little worried that the guy will feel weird at our home after he has interviewed me (and not sure that I won't feel a little weird too lol). I totally understand that just having the connection is certainly no guarantee of being hired and I do not expect any special treatment. I am just really appreciative of the opportunity to interview.
Any words of advice so that neither of us feels awkward at the BBQ?

I can see how it might feel odd. Make sure you smile and keep the conversation very general. I would stay away from any job, interview related conversation. GOOD LUCK.

Re: sort of awkward?
I agree with PP.
Also everyone has different views on mixing business with personal life, but it's a kid-centered party so I think it will be a more comfortable atmosphere overall.
If you guys were boozing it up and had friends or family you may need to worry about, that would be more awkward IMO.

Re: sort of awkward?
I don't think that it's weird, especially since your barbeque was scheduled ahead of time. So it's not like anyone could think you are inviting the interviewer over to curry favor or trying to take advantage of the personal connection in a weird way.
I also don't think it will be awkward since it's a party for a larger group. I just wouldn't bring anything up related to business or the interview (unless he of course does first), given that he may feel put on the spot, or think it's not the time/place to discuss.
Good luck with your interview! Networking in this way is great, and I think much more likely to lead to a job offer than going in cold. Hope it works out.

sort of awkward?
It all went well - the interview and the BBQ. Before the interview, DH's friend called me to give me some idea of what to expect and to tell me that no one else in the interview (it was with 5 people) would know that I knew him. After the interview, he called to say that they were impressed and of all the people seen that day (4), I was the top candidate. He called again, before the BBQ to say that I would most likely be called back for a second interview and that he would talk to me about it at the BBQ - so it was less awkward than I thought it would be because he brought it up and was comfortable with it. We did talk briefly at the BBQ and then yesterday I was called to set up the second interview - YAY!(which won't be until the 1st week of Aug). Thanks and keep your fingers crossed for me!

Re: sort of awkward? Small Update below
So, I had the second interview 2 weeks ago and according to DH's friend it went really well. He texted DH after the interview and said "Awsome job! Really awseome! On to the next step". But, now it's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard anything since then . (I realize it is summer (vacation time) and that was one reason it was so long between the 1st and 2nd round interviews. And, the job is with the State - which I know takes forever to get anything done).
So, what would you do? Would you send a follow up email - I was thinking I would do this, but I don't know who to send it to. The first round interview was with 5 people, including DH's friend (who would be my immediate boss) and the woman I would ultimately report to (it's kind of complicated - I would work for him but would be employed in her department). The second round was 6 people (3 of them were also in the first round; 3 were new - the woman I would ultimately report to was not present for the 2nd round). I'm pretty sure the woman I would report to is the one who has the final say in hiring, but since she wasn't there for the 2nd round, I feel funny following up with her. I feel funny following up with DH's friend because I don't want to put him on the spot (he is not a very close friend of DH's - not someone he would call just to BS or say hi). One other person that would probably have a lot of say in the hiring decision was the CFO - he was there for the 2nd round only, but I don't think he is the one to follow up with. The other people that were present during the interviews are people from several departments that I would interact with on a regular basis, but I don't think they have any say in the hiring decision.
I'm so confused - any advice???

Re: sort of awkward? 2nd Update and new questions
Who is the person who scheduled your interviews? That's usually the contact person for any sort of follow-up.
Good luck!

Thanks. The person who contacted me to schedule everything is a secretary so I do t think I would contact her.

Do you have any sort of HR contact even if you didn't necessarily interview with them? Sometimes HR can be the ones to get things moving.

Then if it were me, I'd probably follow up with CFO. At least you interviewed with him the 2nd round and he has a high level position so it's not like it's coming out of left field. GL!

Re: sort of awkward? 2nd Update and new questions
What about sending a handwritten thank you to the team as well as the guy you know directly?
I also see nothing wrong with inquiring through the secretary.
I know that where I work, ours holds more power than anyone from the outside may think....she has connections to everyone

sort of awkward? 2nd Update and new questions
So I wound up sending a follow up group email to most of the people that were present for the 2 interviews. I don't know if it was coincidence, but a couple of days later, I got a call to go up to Albany to meet with the "head honcho" (it's a job with the State) which was last week. And today I got the call that I got the job!!!! I'm so excited. Thanks for all the advice!
