Contractors...do they give written quotes?

One contractor gave me a written quote and another asked for a deposit if i want something in writing. Is that normal?

Contractors...do they give written quotes?

Depends on the contractor and what the work is for. Some will provide free written quotes, others charge about $200 for their quotes, that will apply to the cost of the work if you chose to go with them. I would call a few more contractors and ask for more quotes - our usual rule of thumb is 3 quotes.

Re: Contractors...do they give written quotes?

I've never paid for a written quote. To me the written quote lets me know what I'm paying for so there is none of the "oh that wasn't in my original quote" nonsense and both the potential customer and contractor are on the exact same page as to what is being done/expected.

Re: Contractors...do they give written quotes?

I had four contractors give me written quotes. One was about 5 pages long. I never paid for any of them.

We're doing work on our house and nobody asked for money to give us an estimate. We had about 6 contractors come, and received estimates from all but 2. 1 couldn't start the work until September, which was unacceptable to us and the other just never bothered to email us their estimate.

Re: Contractors...do they give written quotes?

I've never heard of paying for a quote and DH is a contractor.

He always gives a written one.

If it's a friend, he may come by and look and give them a rough estimate by mouth to gauge their seriousness.

All the contractors offered a written estimate for no charge. Some were 5+ pages long, and others were much more basic. But definitely no charge either way.

The most annoying part was getting contractors to actually do and send the estimate. I couldn't believe how many companies would show up for the estimate and then never send the written quote. I mean, why waste both of our time, you know?

Same experiences as happywife.

For 1 big job I had, I think, 8 companies come in. I think I received 5 actual written quotes (the other 3 never bothered to call/give me an estimate). 2 of them were extremely detailed 4-6 pages long. I've never paid for a quote.

Contractors...do they give written quotes?

We've had all kinds of work done on our house in the past 2 years and gotten written estimates from several contractors for each job - never had to pay a fee

Contractors...do they give written quotes?

Thank you everyone. We spoke with about 5 contractors but only Alure gave us a written quote with all the terms, 3 verbals, and 1 didnt even respond to me follow up calls/emails. I really dont want to use Alure. The guy is just an asz.

Can anyone share their contractor info? I'm running out of people to call. TIA!

We used Top Notch Remodeling in New Hyde Park - we were very happy with him.

It is an aggravating process to get estimates - some contractors may not think your job is big enough so they can't be bothered.

Contractors...do they give written quotes?

I would be wary of using Alure. I've had friends sue them over a completely botched bathroom job and other things I've heard about them.

DH has been asked to fix botched jobs from them.

It's tough.

They should be up front then or recommend a handy man if it's really not that big.

DH also hasn't gotten involved if he senses the person is going to be aggravation, which not to be flamed, is often the case with lots of people. They have a champagne appetite, but store brand soda budget.

A lot of people really have no clue how much things cost or the amount of work that goes into these jobs.

Even what can be perceived as small.

Thank you for this! My DH is a contractor and has these same struggles with customers. They don't understand (well some do, but most don't)

Re: Contractors...do they give written quotes?

Location and size of job matters too.

DH is constantly getting referrals but we live in Western Suffolk.

He got a call yesterday for a bathroom in Howard Beach and a front step replacement in Middle Village. He doesn't want to go there because he'd be losing $$$ in time and travel and take away from his jobs near home or have to charge the customer double, which we know ain't gonna happen.

I get it's hard to find a good contractor but these are still obstacles on the other side of it. He's also limited in who he is willing to recommend too because he doesn't want to end up with someone pissed at him ;). He told me this yesterday in response to what I said earlier about recommending someone.
