ok what's the deal with zones? Sprinkler related
So our home has 5 zones... all the pipes are broken and heads don't come up. The clock is from the 80's and needs to be updated... we got a few quotes but I don't really understand the purpose for having so many zones. FWIW, our home is a little more than 1/4 acre. Huge yard front and back and we ripped out trees.. now laying down soil and seed... wont even have any plants yet lol We will eventually
Landscaper says we probably don't need 5 zones... Some irrigation companies say 4 some say 3. what does matter if you can have as many heads as you want on one zone?? Of course DH was handling the estimates so he didn't ask any questions. TIA!

Water pressure... too many heads on one line = little water.
Depending on the time set, it will effect your inside use of water as well.

I have 5 zones and am just shy of 1/4 acre. I think the more heads you have on each zone diminishes the distance of the spray per zone. I'm mentally trying to picture how many heads I have per zone and I believe I have 4.

ok so the last person recommended only 3 zones. 13-14 heads total. The water pressure is good.. 80 PSI

hmmm.. meaning if I use it mid-day it might impact the water pressure in the shower for example?
That's annoying. The number of zones would impact that? I guess because the less zones, the more water pressure being used per zone?

It totally impacts the water pressure inside the house (shower, faucets, etc.). This is why we have our sprinkler system on a timer and they are set to go off starting at 2AM (no one is using the water then!)

too add, early morning, late at night, the plants/grass can absorb some water. If you do water in middle of heat, some water is lose and is not efficient.

Not to mention that if you have the sprinklers on in the heat of the day you can actually burn the grass because the water acts like a magnifying glass.
We have 7 zones (which now I think is too many based on the above!) and have them set to start at 2am as well.

You can always run more than one zone at a time, as long as the control unit can handle it, which most should. If you run more than one at a time, you can have 7 technical zones, but 3 or 4 virtual zones.

Re: ok what's the deal with zones? Sprinkler related
I have bad water pressure. We have 8 zones, they start going off about 3:30pm. They vary from 5mins to 25mins per zone depending on what that zone is watering.
