Opinions on this..."injury" at school

DD was stung by a bee at recess today. She went to the nurse, who had her wash it, and gave her an ice pack. The nurse never called me. I spoke to the teacher later on, about something totally different, and she never mentioned it to me. I didn't find out til DD got home from school.

Oh, and DD said that while doing work later on, she was adjusting the ice pack on her hand, and the teacher came over and "ripped" it away from her. I'm sure DD was messing with it before that, but still...she's 8!

WWYD? More about the not being called to report the incident to me.

I think I'm going to take care of the teacher incident by just writing her a note telling her that she can just send Marron back to the nurse if her First Aid becomes an obstacle to the lessons in class.

I personally would be mad...i have a severe reaction to bee stings, the area blows up and gets really swollen, if it is in a certain area it could be worse than other areas.

That being said, what if this was her first time being stung, I would want to be called about it, and was there a follow up at all by the nurse to check on her

I would definitely write a note to the teacher about taking the ice pack away from her, if it was bothering her he should of sent her back to the nurse

Yes, this was her first time being stung. And I'm sure that if she were having a serious reaction that I would've been called. I would just expect a "heads up" call...at some point, to at least let me know what to watch her for.

I would contact the nurse and tell her that you want to be called if your daughter is ever hurt at school. They should be doing this anyway but I'm all for giving the benefit of the doubt the first time. If it happens again for any reason, I would raise holy hell and get the principal involved.

I would be mad because it was her first sting. If it was my DS I wouldn't be mad at all, because he's been stung a few times and I know for him it's not that big of a deal.

I'd talk to the nurse and the school should have a policy regarding this incidents. If/when DS visits the nurse, she sends a letter on his backpack explaining what happened and what they did (ice pack, band aid, etc), specially if they hit their heads, because you need to watch them 24 hours after. I'd be pissed if I wasn't informed.

I would be upset about not getting a call from the nurse. I think any injury or medical event at school that could potentially require follow up or monitoring at home merits a call to inform the parents. As people mentioned, there is always the potential of an allergic reaction with a bee sting, so I think that alone is a reason to call.

Maybe you can call the school nurse to find out if they have a policy on when they do and don't call home for a visit to the nurse during the day, and request that you be called in the future if similar things happen.

As far as the teacher/ice pack thing, personally, I wouldn't even write a note or address it. I think the note could kind of come across as questioning the teacher's judgment... I'm sure she knows that if a child needs first aid or has an injury or issue that's interfering with classwork, that she should be sent to the nurse. I think it's hard to know the full circumstances of what's going on in the classroom at any given time. Perhaps the teacher intended to just remove the ice pack so your daughter could more easily do her work, and didn't realize your daughter was still in pain. Or maybe she was annoyed, as you said, that your daughter was playing with it, or found it to be too much of a distraction for the kids. But I'd still let it go at this point, because it was a relatively minor, one-time thing, and it's still early in the school year and everyone is just settling in, getting to know each other, etc.

I would be mad and something about the teacher is rubbing me the wrong way because of your previous post. I could be wrong because I never like to jump to conclusion about a teacher but it's seems she is impatient with your daughter. I was going to post this on your other thread that if the teacher isn't on board with the treatment plan it's going to make it that much harder for your DD. :-/

I would address the lack of communication about the sting and not address the ice pack situation. Someone ran into my son at school the other day and he fell, went to the nurse for ice etc...he was fine..never said anything but there was a note from the teacher in his folder that day giving me all the details and I appreciated that.

It honestly wouldn't bother me. And the teacher thing...well my 8 year olds perception is that of an 8'year old, so I probably would just assume she was doing something she's not supposed to be with the ice pack. But I'm also a teacher, so my perspective is probably different.
