Catholic school vs public school

Is their really a difference .what are they? My
son goes to catholic school ....when he was in pre k I felt like he did so much more than my daughter who is in pre k in public school my son was all day she is only 2 hours and 15 min...next year she will,be going to catholic ....but I would like some input. Thanks

Since most of the Catholic schools don't have to answer to the NYS standards as public school (since they're privately funded) some people feel that they aren't as regulated, while others welcome this as an opportunity to teach material outside the test.
The lecture-based style of teaching is more often used, and in public schools it is discouraged to bring in differentiated instruction.
Some Catholic schools don't offer special services, so if your child may have something that needs to be addressed, sometimes Catholic schools could ask a parent to treat the condition outside, on their own, or recommend that the child attend another school to address the issues.
There are pros and cons to each. With an excellent public school system on LI in most long island towns, paying extra tuition on top of your already high school taxes makes no sense. For some on the other hand, the extra money is worth the values and religious beliefs that are taught in these private schools.

I am answering from the viewpoint of a public school teacher who has seen both sides while teaching, tutoring, and speaking to students and parents. Some of my friends choose to send their children to Catholic school, and they often cite discipline and values as reasons why.

I taught in a Catholic School and also went my entire life disciple and values are huge. In regards to special education if services are needed the students district must come in and provide them. I went to meetings all the time for services but by law they need to r provide them. My brother had services in school and our local district provided them in the Catholic School until high school. In high school the district the Catholic School was located in provided the services. Now if your talking special education on a more restrictive level ie boces type of setting then no that cannot be accommodated. But if it's speech ot pt resource room reading math and such the district and Catholic School work together to provide. Most Catholic schools elementary and high school have resource room and provide push in supports too.

I went to Catholic school in Brooklyn as a child, then moved to long island for middle school. I thought I learned a lot in the first 6 years, but was clearly unprepared for the rigors of a Long Island school. I needed a lot of remedial work, even though I was a straight A catholic school child. Many of my childhood friends agree that we did not learn as much as our peers in public school. That has stuck with me and I feel that there are usually three tiers..

a Catholic school is better than not going to school
A NYC public is better than Catholic and
A LI public is better than a NYC public.

I say this now as a teacher who has taught in both NYC and LI public schools and a parent who has had her children in NYC and now LI schools.

As an adult, I feel that my Catholic school upbringing didn't necessarily teach me discipline...it taught me shame and judgement which is something I do not want my son to have ingrained in him at school. I always felt uncomfortable about learning about Hell in school and didn't think that 2nd graders should have to worry about coveting thy neighbors wife :/

Only you know what is best for your child, however my experiences have pushed me away from Catholic school for many reasons.

I also don't know if this is true in all cases, but I have been told that Catholic school teachers may not be as well trained and versed in things.

Pretty much have one way of doings things.

Obviously too religion is a big part of the curriculum and they simply don't have as much money to do things....hence why they are fundraising all the time on top of tuition.

DS went to nursery in a Catholic school and we were told at open house that for higher grades, they really don't have ability to work with special needs.

We will only consider Cathlolic if public fails DS, and so far, I have to say I am very impressed.

We are in a district often poo-pooed because of the diversity and I have zero complaints so far.

We were also one of the first districts properly trained on common core.

Some people like catholic school bc they are religious, they went, the traditions and community feel, all valid reasons. As an educator and someone who attended both public and catholic school I feel you get a better education at a good public school, generally speaking. I do get why people choose catholic though, for us we will go public route for elem though we may do catholic or private for HS.

As a public school educator living in a really good school district on Long Island I am sending my children to catholic school The reason I am sending my kids to catholic school is I love the family close knit atmosphere that catholic schools have. I also love that the schools aren't all about testing. I was also a product of catholic school and feel I received a great education that not only was about books but was also about life,morals and my religion. Most teachers I had in catholic school were awesome and I though it was really nice how all the religious holidays were celebrated in school I want that same experience for my kids.
