School Spinoff-If money wasn't the issue, would you chose private over public school?

if private, would it be religion based?

I am a Catholic school advocate, but DH does not want math/science/English time "wasted" in religion classes. He would rather a more core academic be taken, then the same one-sided theology lesson year after year.

We'll probably send our kids to Catholic schools (I'm also a product of them).

It really doesn't matter to me unless it's a good school in a good district. If it's private probably non religious school.

Re: School Spinoff-If money wasn't the issue, would you chose private over public school?

Everyone in my family is in Catholic school..one of my cousins is against the social scene in the Catholic school, so for kindergarden and first grade, she gave public a try.

Her daughter tested average for the kindergarden class, so that was the class she was placed in. Then the problem came along where many of the children in the class did not speak English yet. So the teacher had to take a lot of time out from the day to try and interpret. So my cousin worked hard with her daughter all summer going into first grade, and had her tested again to hopefully be placed in the advanced class. She did wind up testing advanced, however, there were no available seats in the advanced class, so she was to be held in average. Then it did not make sense to my cousin that she is being held back due to desk occupancy, so they switched to private.

My decision to send my kids to a Catholic school would be only based on the school district as far as class sizes, school safety, etc. Not the religion part of it.

Public if possible- I think in the better school districts the education is better..
If private, non religious- Religion isn't something that should be taught during school hours...
I'd rather have my children spend time learning about the arts.... a lot of religious schools have really bad music/art programs.

I wouldn't send my child to a religious school, but I went to boarding school and loved it, and would do that in a heartbeat if we have the money. DH doesn't want to, but I know where I went had a great deal more resources and programs than his public school here. I think it made me a better candidate when I applied to colleges.

Well since I went to both Catholic and Public school I would send my kids to Public school- providing the district is good, if not then yes I would send to private or catholic, but its not my first choice! oh and no money is not an issue.

Yes. I am Catholic school educated and had very good experiences. I also taught in Catholic schools and interned in public schools. I do think there's a difference in values and discipline and I would consider it for my kids, depending on the quality of the schools in my area (both public and private).

I think I might have to change my mind.
DH went to Catholic school, and I went to a GOOD public school.
The dsitrict I live in would make me want to send my kids to a Catholic school.

I found those to be some of my most valuable classes. I think DH is little jelous that they didn't have those in his school, but I am a little jealous that he studied Latin.

I don't think I could make a generalization. It
would really depend on the specific public & private schools available to us.

Re: School Spinoff-If money wasn't the issue, would you chose private over public school?

It depends on the needs of the child and what school can fill those needs best. But as somsone who has been to Catholic School, Public School and Private non-religious school, I see the merits of all 3, but I think unless the child has special needs that can't be met in public school or the district is bad, or there's something special about the private school, I'd rather send my children to public school. They meet the greatest variety of people there and in my experience, have the most opportunities. The biggest factor though infavor of private schools is class size, but even in a lot of catholic schools I know of at least, they have 30+ kids in a classroom

Re: School Spinoff-If money wasn't the issue, would you chose private over public school?

Well, I work in a private school. It has no religion base what-so-ever, we are just an "alternative" to the public school systems. Our school falls within a VERY good school district, but many families choose to send their kids to us for a smaller, more challenging environment.
Before teaching in my school, I would not have sent my child to a private school because I thought that the small environment would lead to very socially awkward children, but the students in our school are SO well-adjusted, well-rounded and mature. The 8th grade girls are not concerned with their hair being perfect, they play in the dirt with the boys and the boys are not as competitive as I have seen in the public schools.
So my answer would be YES, I would certainly send my children to private school, and lucky for me, my AMAZING school will allow my children to go free of charge. Chat Icon

ETA: Most of our students are involved in sports and dance and other things outside of our school where they meet most of their friends. Our average class size is 10 kids...TO A GRADE! So it is important that they are involved in other ways, and most of them are.

I wasn't saying if it was valuable or not....What i was meant was that there are plenty of other classes beside academic ones in public school...which was what her FH had an issue with...

Although i myself found NONE of the above classes useful at all...

I am a product of public school but work in a catholic school. Unless I lived in a horrible district, I would never send my children to a catholic school. I don't feel like our students get half as much out of school as public school kids get- the clubs, after school activities and even the quality of the desks, computers, etc... JMHO...

Incidentally, students who study music get higher test scores than those who don't.

I went to a public school (CT though, not NY) and I would probably send my children through that district if I were living there, even with all the problems it's having. I took Chorus and Latin at my public school, was in regional chorus, Nat'l Latin Exam Gold Medalist, and 1480 (800 of which was verbal) on the SATs.

I agree that you can get the same education at a public school, provided the district is good. Here in Delaware we're FAMOUS for our bad schools (we don't charge taxes, how could the gov't pay for it?!), so a lot of kids go to private schools. But in NY, a lot of the public schools are a higher quality, so you can get a good education.

Finally, I wouldn't send my kids to a parochial school of any religion, that's for certain. They can learn about their religion in synagogue sponsored classes.

The Catholic School I went to seems to be really poor. And they don't have the same kind of opportunitis for students. My Catholic school actually encouraged me to leave to join the gifted prgram at a public school, and all of the wrting conestst and programs like CTY, I only heard about once I got to public school. Plus I had a much more varied experience meetings kids of different races, religions, etc, and we were involved in cultural programs so we got a ot more opporunities than your standard class trip to the zoo. Catholic School would be my last choice for my kids. In my area at least, they're so underresourced.

Re: School Spinoff-If money wasn't the issue, would you chose private over public school?

Oh about wated time. We "wasted " a LOT more time in public school. Incathoic school we had religion for 45 minutes twice a week or something like that. In public school we had art, computers, various city-sponsored awareness classes about AIDS, etc, Latin and French in Elementary School, Math League, and believe it or not, interpreation of Modern Art. All of this was during school hours in public school!

I would always choose Publie....but I do think Im in the minority. I am a firm believer in the public school system and supporter.

I went to Private school for a few years for K-2nd grade and again from 6th-8th. the only thing I got from it was better learning, I was way ahead of my grades in public school, but my mom also teached me a lot "at home" that contributed.
