LIJ Katz restricts kids visiting
I'm due to have a c-section with baby #2 in about 2 weeks and I found out that the hospital has put a temporary restriction on any children under 14 visting people in the hospital. I'm sad sad that my 4 year old DD won't be able to come see me and meet her new baby brother for the 3-4 days i'm in the hospital :( She is going to be SO upset!!! Anyone have any experience with this recently? I should add that the restriction is due to the Enterovirus!

It's because of the Enterovirus. I am actually glad they are doing this, it's for the children's protection. I don't know if it's a new rule that they allow younger children in, but I know for a fact that I didn't see my mom in the hospital when she had my brother and I was about the same age. Nor did my brother see my 1/2 sister in the hospital and that was 16 years ago, he was 12, I was 15.

During the cold seasons, hospitals will always put up restrictions to protect the patients and this is especially strict with newborns. My DS was born end of Sept, right before flu season so there were no restrictions but you will generally find these in winter months until around March. They come and go but will be extra strict this year due to the enterovirus situation. I'm happy about this bc my brother was exposed to a horrible respiratory infection at one month and he almost died so I rather be safe than sorry. I'll make it a point to see my DS in the visitor rooms and spend time with him but if they restrict him from seeing the baby in direct contact for the first two days, it is something I will be okay with. DH already said he will make sure DS sees her through the nursery glass and the nurses tend to bring the babies up to the glass if they know the family is there.

I thought they weren't allowed in the hospital at all?

I was told that they were allowed in the waiting area down in the lobby but that was about it.

It could be limited to the waiting room downstairs but like I say, they change the restriction levels all the time. If they don't allow DS at all, we are planning to FaceTime too. I'm giving birth smack in the middle of flu season so I have a feeling the restrictions will still be up. :/

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand why they have the restrictions they have and I obviously would never want to expose my new baby to anything, it's just hard knowing I won't see my DD for 3 or 4 days and that she has to wait to meet her brother for all those days. Just makes me a little sad, that's all.

I know, I don't know how DS will handle it either :( he's 8 and very into this pregnancy and it will be sad to keep him away when all he wants to do is meet his new sister.

Oh okay i didn't know about the visiting area downstairs.
OP - it makes me sad too, even though I understand it is for everyone's protection. I know if my DD can't visit she will be very upset (i'm due in Feb.).

A friend had to deal with this a few years ago. Her son was 7-8 and could not go visit the babies (triplets) or mom. He was a little upset. But family was watching him and they all fawned over him and it was really ok. When they all got home he was all over them.
From my experience, it is a flu season restriction. When DS was born no visitors under 14, period. We were in the NICU, but we were told that during flu season, they do not allow children visitors for everyone's protection.

im due any day and will most likely have to have a section. i am so upset that i wont get to see my dd and she wont get to meet her new sibling right away.
