North Shore LIJ Manhasset Maternity Ward Visiting
Hi, just a question for those that have had babies at this hospital.
I just called to find out when visiting hours are, and she said "open". So I asked when do they end, and she said they don't.
Does that mean the babies are in the room with mommy the entire time? Are they in the nursery behind the glass? I was going to bring my kids, but if baby is in the room the whole time, then obviously I won't. I can't believe the hours are just all day whenever you want, are they? And also, can the kids go, or is the baby in room with mom?
Thank you!
ETA: I am the Aunt of the baby, not the mom delivering

I had my dd there in November and even though the " visiting hours are posted as 12 to 8" they are just posted as suggestion to the moms...they do not technically adhere to them! The hours are whenever you want. As far as the baby being in the room with you, that's totally up to you. If you don't want the baby in the room with you the whole time the kids are their (only your children are allowed, no others) and I would check with even this now because of the flu going around, they might even say NO KIDS at all, double check that...but you can let them see the baby, then bring the baby back to the nursery or have them come and get the baby. Good luck ::)) I had a great experience both times, but this last one was even better because the rooms were new and private! They are soooooo nice!

Thank you, I should have clarified, I am the Aunt of the baby. I doubt during this season, they would bring newborns out with all of those people in the room? I just don't have a sitter, and was going to go tomorrow.

I believe it would be up to the mom if the baby was in the room. If you are going with your kids I would probably give a head's up to the mom so she can have the baby put back in the nursery.

Ok, I would definitely call and check, because I know in November, only brothers and sisters were allowed, no other children. Especially now with the flu epidemic, they might be more strict!

I know, that's the thing, I was hoping to just go and see the baby through glass, like a nursery. WIth the flu going around, I am shocked by the "open" hours. I would think they would make it a little more strict.
I am going to call, and see. The hospital I delivered at only had viewing hours through the nursery glass for an hour for aunts/uncles/friends/etc. So they were super strict!

Its up to mom to put baby back in the nursery. My friends brought their LOs and let me know when they were arriving so I could send my kids back to the nursery. The kids were thrilled to look at them thru the glass. They also have a play table outside by the elevators.

open hours...whick honestly i would have much preferred set hours for visitors! it is up to the mom to have the baby in the room - but to be honest the nurses pushed to keep the baby in the room, mine was never in the nursery.

My baby was in the room with me the whole time. I wouldn't bring kids up to the ward regardless of where the baby is. Germs can stick around for a while even after you leave.

North Shore LIJ Manhasset Maternity Ward Visiting
Its a new policy that was implemented in October. There is now an open visitation policy for hospitals adhering to a law that was passed recently It applies to all the units not just maternity. However judgement calls are made depending on the situation. But yes, there are no more visiting hours anymore. Its an open visitation policy.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
ETA: Its not JUST Manhasset. All hospitals should have implemented this policy. I know LIJ and Manhasset have.

These days the newborns are always in the room with the mom unless the mom sends the baby to the nursery.
