FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
Hey girls,
Any FTMs who live in Long Island and commute now and will go back to work at 3 months? Thought we can start this topic so we can discuss strategies once we go back to work since we'll be away from our houses for the most # of hours throughout the day. Also, sometimes it just helps to see you're (me) not the only one!

I have a 21 month old and am expecting #2 next summer. I do the commute every day now and will be after #2. It's just life and you adjust!

Thanks! And may I ask if you use a daycare center or have a Nanny? Trying to figure out schedule-wise what the heck I will do

FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I went back to work 8 weeks after having my DS. My dh drops DS off at daycare at730 and I pick him up by 530. I worked it out with my boss so I can take a 409 train home.
It's just a way of life. I work because I want to and while I would love to work on LI I could never make the $$ I do in the city.
We love our daycare and DS loves being there.

Totally agreed that I wouldn't make the $ i do in the city, in Long Island, and wouldn't get home until 7:15p...wish I could take a 4p train. Maybe I'll be able to ask for this stuff when I am able to tell work (too early to tell them yet!)

Re: FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I live in Queens and my commute to Manhattan is over an hour each way. I've been doing the commute since DS was 2 months old & will be again after I have my second in the spring. It eats up the whole day but what can you do. I'd love to work part time but my job doesn't offer that as an option. I spend every minute with DS from the time I come home until he goes to sleep, and then get other stuff done after he goes to sleep. It's rough but I live for the weekends & any other days off.

FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I will be a few days a week. The earliest train I can possibly grab is the 520 but most days it will be the 610 or latter. Won't be in the door until at least 7. But I also get to work from home a few days so it's not terrible. My mom will be watching LO. Commuting stinks but I have a really great job that I love and my company is flexible so I can't complain. Plus I wouldn't give up the money and opportunities my place offers. I never really pictured myself as a SAHM either so I don't really feel too conflicted about going back.

FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I did it with DS from when I went back to work when he was 12 weeks old. My hours are 8:30-5:30; so I would drop him off and then rush out to pick him upby 6:30. When daycare switched to 6pm p/u DH has to switch his hours to be able to get him by 6. With the new baby I am trying to look for a job closer to home. Considering my hours are until 5:30 leaving at 4:30 to get him or the new baby by 6 is pushing it. DH wouldn't be able to get the both in enough time But for me; I'm ready to cut my commute out in general anyway. The 90 minutes to/from work just isn't worth it anymore especially leaving work at 5:30 and not getting into the house until 7.

Oh and a friend of mine that commutes from NJ; ended up getting a Nanny; it was the same cost and it allowed her more flexibility...not having to drop the kids anywhere; and they were already home (the Nanny was able to stay until she got home from work).

Thanks so much for your feedback! (And to everyone!)
I wonder how to find a nanny that we like and trust, but yeah that is a great option for ppl who can find one. The cost scares me even though both DH and I have great jobs! How do people do it!

The Nanny she used was referred to her by someone in her neighborhood. Maybe care.com? Or if you can connect with local Mom's and see if they have any suggestions?

We used a nanny when DS was born b/c we didn't like any of the day cares near where we lived at the time. Now that we're living on LI, we will use day care for both kids. Nannies are convenient, but expensive and when they get older, I like the socialization and learning aspects.
ETA: We used Care.com to find our nanny. Found our day care through word of mouth and recommendations on this site.

FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
We opted to put DD in daycare. I drop her off at 7:30am and DH picks her up at 5:30pm.
My biggest word of advice is to have everything ready the night before so you just have to grab and go. Also, have daycare feed your LO when you arrive. I didn't do that for the first few weeks and what a difference it makes not having to rush.

Thanks for the advice! Nice that your DH gets home early enough to pick up your LO at 5:30p. My DH woudln't leave NYC until 6:30p and I don't leave NYC until 6p...hence why i'm stressing

FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I don't commute from LI but, I commute from Rockland into the city.
We use a daycare. We found one with extended hours so I can leave here around 5pm and get the kids on time.
I also have my inlaws doing a lot of picking up and dropping off which helps give me some flexibility in case I have to work late.

Most daycares will require a 6pm pickup...6:30 at the latest. Would you be able to switch your hours to leave earlier?
Because of this I'm looking for a job closer to home. I need to be able to get the kids by 5:30/6. And Can't do that with my current commute into the city.

Re: FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I'm not sure if they will let me leave at 5p...can't ask these things until I am far enough along to tell them I'm actually preg, so for now was speculating. If $ was no issue I'd just hire a nanny to pick it up from daycare and meet us at home, but that would be too much $ i bet.

Re: FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I am pregnant with #4 and commute from Huntington into the city each day. After my twins, I adjusted my hours and worked 7-3 and took a pay cut for Fridays off. You do what you have to do. Initially, DH was home w the kids 2 days, they were in day care 2 days and I was home Friday - Sunday. Now, DH is home w them during the week and he works weekends.

Re: FTM's Commuting from NYC who'll continue to work!
I am a FTWM with #2 on the way. I returned to work after 6 months maternity leave and my DD goes to day care. I prefer this to a nanny and would like to have 2 in day care when I go back to work again - even though I think the nanny would be cheaper than having 2 in daycare. When I went back to work - one of the things I worked out with my manager was to continue working after bedtime. I get out the door most days by 5PM - but then if I have things to finish up or required work - I have no issues logging on from home at 8/9PM and putting in a little extra time. This is after bedtime so I don't feel guilty and I think it's a great trade off for the extra time with my DD.

The other thing you can think about is daycare near your jobs. If you both work in the city it might be an option.

I am due in February. After my leave, luckily DH will drop off and pick up the baby from day care. I commute from NJ to NYC.
