I'm going with who knows? I think everyone is different and shows differently. IMO and from what I've seen you can have a similar body type and carry differently. I'm petite, 5 foot 110 pounds pre preg and people who don't know are starting to notice now (depending on the outfit) at 24 weeks. I can still fit into some of my regular jeans and at this point have bought a size or two up in jeans or the stretchy style jeans (I'm just not a fan of maternity clothes hahaha). I'm hoping I can stay in regular clothes a bit longer.

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I was slim but far from athletic. I didnt have any muscle tone, never worked out a day in my life. I didn't show until very late. Like 6 months. I delivered full term with the belly of an average 6 month preggo. So it goes to show, how you carry isn't really related to how fit/in shape you are. Imo it's probably genetics. My mom carried small too.

I am not fit by any definition of the word. I delivered at 28 weeks and did not look pregnant at all. People who did not know I was pregnant would never have even guessed. I wore my regular clothes up until I delivered. I don't know what I would have looked like if I went to term, but had only gained 10 pounds when I delivered, which is how much I fluctuate regularly.

I ran until 2 days before DS was born. I carried small and was all belly - gained 23 pounds. I started wearing maternity clothes at 24-25 weeks. I had an awful in between phase though where I just looked like I had gained a few pounds (week 18-24) - at that point I wished I had just popped!

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I don't know how "athletic" you would consider me but I was slim/relatively in good shape, went the gym during my pregnancy and was relatively petite 105 lb 5'1. I started to show with my first/wore maternity pants at 14-16 weeks. Gained 34 pounds during pregnancy. So far with my 2nd I am showing MUCH sooner (stretched abd muscles??).

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I really think it's all individual and related to genetics and body type/height and length of torso. I am 5'8 and was just 125lbs with DS- was not athletic but no ounce of fat on my body and I carried very light. I believe I started to show around 20 weeks and took on small maternity clothes at that point but still wore regular clothes. With this DC, I was about 10lbs heavier but I still didn't show much until 20/22 weeks. I am around 33 weeks and my stomach is still not too big. It really varies on body type. I have some very athletic, muscle toned friends who showed fairly early because they were more on the petite side. You never really know until you go through it! Good luck!

A tight belly will help after the fact.... During is more about genetics.

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I'm not slim, I have a larger frame, but before my first pregnancy I was pretty fit/athletic and I really didn't really show until the third trimester. However I don't attribute that to exercising a lot before pregnancy, I think it was more just genetics & body type-- I have a longer torso (shorter legs) and the OB told me I have a "roomy pelvis" so I guess the baby had lots of room in there without spreading outward. I do think being fit & exercising helps your muscles bounce back faster afterward though.

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I am slim but not work out fit. I started out 118 5'7 and at 22 weeks with my third pregnancy I am 132. I just started to really pop this week everyone keeps saying.

Re: athletic/fit/slim girls

I had a slim athletic build and continued teaching dance until the day before I delivered both kids. I danced 4 days a week and went to the gym. I didn't gain much during the first tri-mester with either kid, but once I popped, I just kept getting bigger. I put on 48lbs with my first and 52lbs with my second. I have friends who aren't active at all who only gained 20lbs. I really believe that your body us going to do what it's going to do. There's no way to guess how it's going to play out.

Chat Icon I know! The way he said it when he examined me was like a compliment, like he was pleasantly surprised about all the space in there for pushing the kid out lol, I think I said "thank you" Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was in good shape, going to the gym, etc and I my belly popped really fast. By 8-9 weeks people at work were eyeing my belly. I couldn't even hide it by 12 weeks and strangers were already asking me if I was pregnant. I was huge at the end. As others said, I think it's all genetics.

eta- I'm petite and attributed it to that but apparently others the same size as me sometimes show much later. Who knows why this happens!
