Graco Snugride 30 Click Connect City Mini Snap n Go
It's really personal preference. All car seats are safe but they have different features which is why they have different prices. You also don't have to go with an infant carrier. You can start off with a convertible.
Here's a list of recommended seats --- http://csftl.org/recommended-seats/#rfo

We have the new britax be safe 35 (infant)and graco forever (convertible)...
Now for strollers we have an uppababy vista, britax affinity, uppababy g luxe, and BOB Ironman (jogging).....(my name is bunnyluck and I'm a stroller addict..jk vista was a handme down and I won the affinity...).
I also really liked the city mini gt and select. I registered for those but removed them since receiving the other two.
I like the idea of an infant seat that clicks directly into the stroller, britax gives you that option and they make great highly rated products.

BBB you can make an appointment with so done in the dept. We found that really helpful. But come prepared. Ask friends with babies what they got and if/why they like them. Also the Baby Bargains book has a great section on this.
We chose the Graco Click connect. All my friends have and love their Chicco so I went in with the plan to but that. But after carrying both I found the Graco a bit lighter and easier to carry and it clicks in and out so easily.
We came so close to getting the Citi Mini because of the one hand fold, but ultimately chose the Graco Modes because we liked the way it folds and how little room it takes folded without the toddler seat in it. We thought it would be easier to take to NJ with us all summer. We steered them all around the store. My friend suggested putting a heavy bag over the handle bar to see if it tips and making sharp turns. Also DH is tall so I made sure he tried every stroller to see if it was comfortable for him.

Also they change so quickly. Many of my friends helpful comments no longer held up. Like my friend said the Graco was to heavy, but it's now lighter then the Chicco.

For DD we used the Chicco Travel System in Aster and graco convertible forever. The travel system is pink and grey. If this baby is a girl I plan to use the same as long as their are no recalls between now and then and will just get a double stroller since they will be 2 years apart. Not sure which one but I have a lot of time before I will even think about it.

Re: Registering?
I picked the Uppa Cruz stroller, the maxi cosi infant car seat, and the Britax marathon for a convertible.

I wanted to add one thing --- car seats expire. If you do not plan on using a convertible car seat until the baby is older, do not register for or buy it until you are ready to use it. DD is 10 months old and we just put her in the convertible for the first time today. Since we just got it this week, it was manufactured later than if we had registered for it and we can now use it longer. Also, when I was pregnant, the seat that we ultimately decided on (Graco 4Ever) didn't exist when I was pregnant. I would have missed out on being able to get this awesome seat!
