Is this quote ridiculous?
My husband and I are looking to add another bedroom to our three bedroom colonial. To do this we'd be adding 250 sq ft, and also making the current master bedroom smaller. Part of the existing master will become a hallway that leads to the new bedroom. There is no plumbing involved at all and there are no significant changes needed for structural support. We got a quote for $76,000. We are both stunned and were expecting it to be far less. Any thoughts?

Re: Is this quote ridiculous?
i would think so - especially if not including structural changes. If you are adding the sq footage they need to do a foundation and maybe there are other things that need to be changed.
Get a few estimates and see what they say.

That seems crazy high! We were told around the same amount to add a second floor to our house.

Always get a few estimates for the exat same scope of work -
But, are you adding a foundation, windows, siding, that type of thing? OR are you renovationg a raw space (like, taking away a part of the garage or something)
If the space is there, I think that's VERY high ......

We're adding new space that is not there yet - 230 sq feet of space, including five windows. Additional structural support quoted at around $2k.

I know it's not the same, but when we were looking to convert our 1 car garage to a 2 car (so, break through the wall and add basically another room - no heat, no window though), we were quoted around $30K. So if the structural support is only $2K, I can't imagine it would be $74K to build the room

It does seem high. But its hard to tell without understanding the whole picture. is this a ground floor addition? if not, where is it going? over the garage? new foundation with a room under it? are there significant parts on the roof/siding that need to be redone as a result of this? how much actual reconfiguring needs to be done, are they just building a wall and a doorway? or is there more.
All those things can add to the cost. $76K seems high basically regardless of the answers, but I wouldn't be surprised between $30-$40K
Get more quotes, and get some from midsized/smaller companies. not 1 man shows, but not Allure
