Say if Conceived naturally and low Prog.

I am taking a break from my RE due to scheduling conflicts and life events that recently happened. A little background I have "unexplained infertility" and In the summer I had one failed IUI (started Progesterone supp. week after IUI) and one successful IUI (Progesterone Supp was taken 3 days after IUI) but ended in a chemical. So I believe my progesterone is on the low side.

So my question is if I conceive naturally how do I increase my progesterone, I only have a few suppositories left. I am assuming my RE won't give me a prescription for one unless I do an IUI. I see there are some over the counter creams but not sure how strong they are.

Any advise would be helpful.

I conceived this pregnancy naturally after 4 failed IUI's and have low progesterone. The only thing I used was crinone during the 2WW, which helped me to get my BFP. I would ask your RE for a refill and just let them know you want to try naturally for this month. If not then you can ask your OB.

If you truly believe your progesterone is low, don't take no for an answer on this.

If you get pregnant naturally, as soon as you get a bfp call your ob to do blood work and check progesterone. If it is low they will give you something, but you may not truly need it.

At what point did you start taking it?

Yes! This worked for my sister.

I tracked my O via temping and used an OPK. So I started taking it 2 days after I O'd.

From your description alone, I'm not sure why you're convinced you have low progesterone. You can have high progesterone and still have a chemical. And, it's even possible to have low progesterone and not start taking supps until after your BFP and be successful. Have you had blood work show low progesterone?

I think your RE would probably give you a script for progesterone even if you're trying on your own. If your progesterone is low then you should start taking it after you ovulate. My RE is doing something similar for me right now and it hasn't been a problem. Personally, I wouldn't want to wait until a BFP to start progesterone. I'd want to start it as soon as possible to minimize the chances of a loss due to low progesterone.

I'm just curious what you mean by this? That she shouldn't take a no from her doctor about getting a script from progesterone? Or something else that could be done? I have low progesterone too and I'm wondering if you know something I don't! Thanks! Chat Icon

No, you're right. I meant that if she feels like she needs the progesterone, she should insist upon the supplementation unless her doc can prove she doesn't need it. Unfortunately, I didn't do that during my first pregnancy, and I will regret it for the rest of my life. I don't want anyone else to feel that "what if?" regret.

I gotcha! I totally agree. Unfortunately, I also learned firsthand the dangers of low progesterone. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Say if Conceived naturally and low Prog.

When I first started at my RE I conceived naturally and my RE gave me progesterone supplements. With my first daughter, my OB prescribed my an oral progesterone supplement. I don't see why they wouldn't if it in fact is low.

I would just ask for it anyway, it couldn't hurt to be on them. I had a short LP to begin with (as low as 8 days!) so I am convinced had I not been on the progesterone during my 2ww I wouldn't have been able to get pregnant. Good luck!
