Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
I have looking to buy a house in Hicksville, Bethpage and Levittown since the prices are reasonable in those towns. I am across some research about Bethpage being a cancer cluster. I like the town its really beautiful and the houses are very nice. Is it true? Is the government doing anything about it? Thanks

Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
It's the "Bethpage Plume" from Grumman. I live in Massapequa and have Massapequa water district water, and the plume is not yet in our water supply but it's spreading. Every year it seems to be bigger. It is true, the rates of certain cancers there are higher than surrounding areas.

Yes this is scaring me especially since it is traveling south!

Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
The plume is supposed to be really fixed because of recent legislation, but who knows how long it will take. There was a recent newsday article that said they were trying to figure out the size of it first... The water is treated. Not sure if having the plume under your house does anything. I'd prefer not to have my house over it just in case. As others said, this is not the only ground contamination on LI.

I know Mass water district is VERY active with containing it and making sure as best they can that they prevent it from reaching our water supplies. I know that it's not far, but far enough, away from where I own, and I'd like it stay that way.

Re: Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
My company is located on the Grumman property and I refuse to drink the water. Right across from our building is a small government bldg with people coming and going all day long that test the water and are working on the problem. It's scary to think what was going on there when Grumman was active on the property that could have made the water so bad!

Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
My best friend tests groundwater for the federal government for a living. She told us to steer clear of Bethpage. But DH's grandparents live there and are in their 90's with no health problems. I don't know how close they are to where the Grumman property was though.

Re: Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
Its not all the plume's in Bethpage, just the one in Grumman. I am in Bethpage and practically live next door to the water district and there is nothing wrong with that plume.. it's only 1 of 3 plumes that was contaminated and its working south.. They apparently fixed the problem in Bethpage but spreading to Plainedge/Massapequa from what I was told.

Exactly. I met someone who does sprinklers in Merrick/Bellmore and he told me Bethpage and Plainview have the best water. It's constantly being tested. It's not the water they are afraid of it's the soil. Plus, as the PP said....it's spreading down 107. So it's not just Bethpage..it's hitting other areas. Sadly, it's all over long island though. There are other plumes on Long Island..just some examples: New Hyde Park and Deer Park has too. It's just that Grumman is always in the news, and honestly I look at it like a good thing since our water district is so on top of it.

I thought a plume was specifically related to toxins that have leached into the water. I am not sure what you are trying to say but what you are actually saying is not correct. Any plume is one with toxins.
What is a groundwater plume? A groundwater plume is a body of groundwater containing contaminants exceeding federal and state drinking water levels at multiple well locations. Contaminated water can result when fuels, solvents, or other potential contaminants are spilled or released on the ground. When these materials filter through the sandy Cape Cod soil, they encounter groundwater, or the water table, where the soil is saturated with water. As the groundwater moves, the contaminants may dissolve and be carried with it, creating a groundwater plume.

None of the plumes are contaminated. There was one of concern a few years back, but it was tested and was fine. She must have just said it wrong.

Maps show that the plumes are heading south over 107. Many are aware..i'm sure the water districts are all over it. My concern isn't the water..it's more the soil.

Re: Bethpage Cancer Cluster????
ughh!!! We thought we were good in the area where we JUST bought our house but I just saw on a superfund map that there is a superfund site right here. I have read that cancer rates are higher surrounding the sites so now I want to move again. This is BS.
To the Op's post, we had omitted bethpage, plainview, and some other areas for this reason when we began looking but I feel that most of LI is contaminated anyway.
