Bethpage Cancer Project
So of course after we close on our house in Bethpage, I see this. I am freaking out! I have two kids and I am pregnant with the third. We are on the Island Trees SD side, but still relatively close to Grummans. I am trying to find a map to see if we are affected, but it looks like it's anyone that drinks Bethpage water? I already told my husband we are signing up for home delivery, I just worry about cooking with the water and showering. Ugh!! Just what I need to add to my anxiety.
Anyone have any info on this. I googled it, but I keep getting sent to the same spots and it doesn't seem like I can find exactly who what and where. Are they cleaning it up? Is it just by the number streets? I can't seem to find what is said about water tests recently either.
ETA I found this from 2011, and it looks like there isn't anything that is really high that it got a violation.

Bethpage Cancer Project
We live in Bethpage quite near Grumman and also found out about this issue only after we closed. But, take a look at the Bethpage Water District website. They have been treating the water and removing all the toxins to levels lower than state and national standards for more than 10yrs now. So, the water is definitely safe to drink. However, you might be more comfortable getting bottled water. As far as the Bethpage Cancer Project, it is an effort by an independent organization to collect information on cancer cases in Bethpage becoz the government review said there was not much of a difference between cancer rate in Bethpage and other areas. The recent discussion has been about ways to keep the plume from contaminating other district water wells that are south of us. The Navy/Grumman has proposed one set of measures which is opposed by the water districts involved(Farmingdale and Massapequa). I haven't kept up with the current status on that. If you google for bethpage water plume, you will see a graphic which lists where the plume has spread till now. But even if you are in that area, remember it is quite a bit underground so you can enjoy digging in your yard if you want to!! Here's a website with more info and contact details for more information. http://bethpagewater.org/News/Article.aspx?id=4&title=what-you-should-know-about-the-northrop-grummannavy-plume Hope it helps to ease your worries a bit!
