obgyn rant- switched doctors (also RAVE on new dr)

I just wanted to share what a horrible experience I had with my *now former* obgyn. I started bleeding a few days ago, at 6 weeks, and called my doctor. The office told me it was probably nothing and not to worry, but I explained that it was heavy enough to fill a pad (tmi sorry), and that it was bright red. The woman on the phone basically said that although it's not necessary, I could come in two days... I was in shock. I said I was extremely nervous and upset and needed an emergency appointment- I got the same response back: either take the appt in two days, or go to the hospital...

My mom is a nurse in L&D, but I was trying to keep this a secret from her until 12 weeks to surprise her. But because of the situation, I ended up calling her and telling her everything, and she was pissed that they wouldn't give me an appt, but was not surprised because she wasn't a fan of that office. The doctor is NEVER there, the office never answers their phone, and the dr. frequently has one or two resident doctors take her place in the office and during deliveries.

My mom LOVES dilena, lopresti, and nadel in Garden City, and told me to call them and explain the situation. I told her there was no way I would get an appt. on such short notice, but she insisted that this office is amazing and would find a way. I got on the phone with their office and told the desk manager I was bleeding and that my current doctor wouldn't get me in for two days. The desk manager was extremely surprised. She said she would get me in that day and would call within 2 hours (when the dr got there) and would let me know what she can do. Well, I got a call 5 mins later because she called the doctor's cell- She asked me when I wanted to come and said she would make it happen. She was amazing and so nice. She asked if I had any bloodwork results from my previous doctor, to have them fax it over to the office that day.

So, I called my old doctor to get my blood work results faxed over to dilena's office, and they gave me a hard time, asking why I needed it and whatever- I explained that dilena's office actually had the time to see me, and they were shocked that my current doctor would not. I also explained that were shocked that my current doctor never even told me what the results of my bloodwork were, and even if the hcg levels were normal or not. They ended up faxing the results over, but were very nasty.

At my appt with Dilena that evening, they noticed I had a miscarriage. In fact, there was NOTHING on the sonogram at all. He couldn't even see any leftover tissue. So, in his opinion, my current doctor should have called me back in two days after my bloodwork for more, because my hcg levels weren't that high. They weren't terribly low, but were low enough. I could not believe that my doctor never even called to tell me this! I was 6 weeks at this time, but for all I know, I could have had a fetus that stopped growing at like 3.5 or 4 weeks! I felt like I was totally left in the dark about everything. I know that my original doctor couldn't have prevented a miscarriage, but it was very upsetting that it could have been identified alot sooner, rather than me having to freak out at home because I was bleeding. Would have been nice to know ahead of time that it might be happening....

Sorry for the extremely long post, but I just wanted to share my experience, and let everyone know how much I love dilena, nadel and lopresti's office.

Good riddance! Happy you switched. That is unacceptable. Anytime I call my ob about some emergency they always get me in same day. Although my biggest gripe is that they always fit emergencies in and when I have a regular,ad appt I wait 45-60 min! Better than the alternative I guess

So sorry about your mc. Hope you're back here soon and you will be in much better hands with a new dr.

Drs Dilena and Lopresti are amazing(use to work in L&D at Winthrop). I use to see Dr Nadel when he was a sole prop(2003). You are free to FM me for details.

Dr. Dilena is amazing!!! Beyond amazing!!! I have seen 14 obgyns... Yes 14 because if they give the statement use birth control pills to control pcos until you want to get pregnant then just use meds...I felt it was unacceptable and needed more answers but It was the response every doctor but him gave me. Dilena met with me and discussed my pcos and various options for over an hour gave me an exam and did a sono himself to review my case. I travel over an hour just to see him.... Beyond amazing office and doctor sorry for your terrible experience but excited you now have a doctor that cares! :)

I'm sorry that happened to you. I left an OBGYN for a similar reason (I'd had a chemical pregnancy) and was not happy with the way I was treated. I wound up finding a wonderful office that I love.

I'm sorry that happened to you, but I can easily guess who your old doc is! I also recently switched practices because I hated the office.

I use this practice as well and love them! Dr. Miller just delivered my daughter at Winthrop. There was never a wait and all the doctors were great.

Glad you were able to switch, no doctor should tell a patient who is bleeding to come back in 2 days!! When I had some bleeding at 9 weeks I called my OB's emergency line at like 6am and he answered his cell phone himself, and told me to come into the office as soon as they opened. Best of luck to you going forward.

I'm sorry about your loss, but I am glad you switched!! I switched very early in my pregnancy because my Dr was sending me for all these things i didn't need (said I had a cyst in my ovary that needed to be check out right away and they found absolutely nothing) and he and the nurse hurt me when they were doing the internal sonograms.

Best wishes for you with your new Dr.

Re: obgyn rant- switched doctors (also RAVE on new dr)

So sorry for your loss! Thinking of you during this difficult time.

I also had a terrible experience throughout my miscarriage and the aftermath (mostly emotional) that prompted me to switch offices. It was a real wake-up call that that was the way they treated patients going through such an awful situation like that. I found another practice that I liked a lot. Then I found my ob who I love even more than the last office. It is so important to feel comfortable with your doctors, nursing staff, etc. It makes a huge difference especially when pregnant after a loss.
