Ice dam and water leaking
With this winter being what it is I think I have ice dams on the roof and now notice water leaking above a window into the house. Since it is above freezing and raining I'm afraid of what damage it can cause. Any suggestions on what to do? Im hoping that the ice will be able to melt a bit with the above freezing temps and then the water can drain normally. My husband is going to check it out tomorrow. Thanks!!

If its leaking into the house you will likely need a roofer to cone make some repairs

Ice damming can happen even on new roofs. Your gutters are clogged and frozen. If your DH can break some of the ice out today while it's warm that will help. If you can't clear the gutters on the day it finally gets warm enough to melt everything you will get a lot of water in your house.

Re: Ice dam and water leaking
Wow, same EXACT thing happened to us last night! Water was dripping down one of our cabinets in our kitchen (behind it too), onto our counter. DH, God love him, went out there at 11 PM and cleaned out the gutters...they were iced up. The leak stopped, but I don't know if the rain got lighter at that point or what. I'd still like to get a roofer in here to check it out. Sometimes I really want to go back to renting...owning a home is rough!

Re: Ice dam and water leaking
Old or new roof, ice dams will cause water to find a way in. This weather makes it almost impossible to prevent. In a severe case, you would almost be better off removing the gutter. You can take rock salt and put it in a pantyhose and toss it up on the gutter to break up and melt the ice dam, too. Then go up on a ladder and try to chip it off. Not easy though, but it's very common when you go from freezing temps to rain.

Our roof is under 5 years old and we're having this! It's coming through our ceiling, we have major damage. We don't have a tall enough ladder to get up to the roof and even if we did, I don't want DH getting injured climbing a ladder in the snow and ice. What a nightmare, our kitchen is trashed!

Get a roof rake. So at least it limits what is on the roof to melt. Less up there is less to leak inside.

Ice dam and water leaking
we had a leak yesterday in the kitchen. I'm in CT and could not get anyone to come over to help. My dh came home early and he went up on the ladder and broke the ice and cleared that part of the roof. He sees a hole caused by ice. Our roof is about 5 yrs old so not old. We got the leak to stop but hoping it doesn't leak again. We will just have to clear the section after each storm. I am so over this winter. The stores were out of roof rakes but I am going to search for one or get it for next year

Check smaller, local hardware stores; True Value, etc. Most people forget about those types of places. Home Depot/Lowes are usually sold out fast.

Thanks everyone! My husband got a roof rake and was able to get some of the snow off the roof. The gutters were all ice. Now more snow to add to it....cant wait for spring! ;)

We have had this issue. Roof rake will definitely help prevent. You can get ice shields installed.

We threw ice melt directly on the roof along with hockey puck size melt tablets.
Just found this: http://www.roofrake.com
