pre-school birthday present (not going to party)

My son just moved up to pre-school last month (it's all part of Montessori daycare) and he was invited to a birthday party for one of the kids. I really don't know most of his classmates yet and don't know this child. We can't go to the party b/c it's my niece's communion. What's the etiquette? Do we send a gift for the child to daycare? TIA!

I've gotten both. We have gotten gifts from kids that didn't attend. We have also just got a sorry we cannot make it. I don't think there is an etiquette. Do whatever works for you.

I just had DS bday party. He's been in school with these kids since September and even a few from last year. We had 8 kids not come to his party and not one sent a gift. So I think you're fine not sending anything.

If you don't know the child that well, I wouldn't send a gift. I would only send a gift if it was someone that my child was very friendly with.

Thank you all for your responses! That's what I was hoping, but I didn't want to offend so early in the class!

I've never bothered sending a gift if I already RSVP'd no to a party. The only time I have ever sent in a gift is when DS got sick the morning of the party that we had already RSVP'd yes to.
