Taking pics of your home for public record/sale prices??
I'm home yesterday as I happened to be off (personal day I had put in for). I just went to contract on my house last week and we are closing next week (quick close bc buyer doesn't need a mortgage). My boyfriend was there with me and the doorbell rings, there is a HUGE - like body-builder HUGE man standing outside. His car is parked in the street outside my house, dark tints, door just left open, with out of state plates.
I look at my boyfriend and I'm like, I'm not answering the door. I don't know who this person is and it seems shady. Fine. I would never even consider it if I was alone but since he was there I felt like I had to say why I wasn't going to.
He knocks, rings the bell, knocks again. He stalks off and paces up and down my driveway. Very strange looking. Then he takes a camera out and starts, while standing ON my driveway, photographing the front of my home. I'm like, OK I guess it's having to do with the fact that I'm in contract I know they keep a public record of sale prices of homes, fine. So, now I'm not AS nervous plus thank God my boyfriend was there, who is armed, as he is a cop. Anyway, he then proceeds to open the gate to my fence into the backyard!!! He walks into the backyard, walks around, on my deck, and starts snapping pics of the back. That's when my boyfriend had had enough - he pokes his head out and asked what the fluck he was doing. The guy muttered something about taking pictures for public record/house sale price and kind of had an attitude. So my boyfriend steps out ON the deck and told him to leave. He finally did, with an attitude.
He came back inside and was like, I was so close to pulling the gun on him because of how shady he was acting and how ballsy he was to do that.
How do you think you can just trespass into someone's yard??
Has anyone ever had anything like this happen when selling a house/in contract?? WHY couldn't you just snap pics of the front of the house from the street and be on your way??
I am just so thankful he was there and that my son wasn't home.

From what I understand, the pictures they use for public record when your home is sold are the pictures your realtor used when listing your home. I've never heard of something like this being done and while it's not illegal for anyone to photograph the outside of your home from the street, it IS illegal for someone to trespass onto your property while for any reason. I would have been totally creeped out and tried to get his license plate number.

Could it have been someone from the buyers home insurance company (they usually do an exterior inspection at the least)?
Usually, you have a heads' up about this type of thing.
But the guy probably was ringing your doorbell to tell you he was there and what he would be doing, but if you didn't answer and he thought no one was home, he should have left a card or something on your door to say he had been there. And obviously should have identified himself and stated his purpose for being there when confronted.
But as a PP said - no one from the town or county comes around taking pics for public record. The public records for houses that were recently sold include the MLS photos.

No, I had the men for insurance, termites, inspection and then an electrician all make appointments with me via my buyer and come and do what they needed to do -- with me being aware.
This was just a random guy. I even asked my buyer about it later and both lawyers - everyone was like what the heck?

Could it be because I didn't list my home?
I mentioned to my mom that I was thinking of selling to go to a condo and she told her friend -- her friend's son then came and offered me what I wanted for the house, done. It was like wow that was easy lol. I never even listed it.

Could it have been for a comp? I chased away a man taking pictures of my neighbors house once because I thought it looked shady, and later found out he was using it as a comp for another home in the area.

I didn't think comps were needed when a buyer is not getting a mortgage. He's paying cash (lucky b@stard lol) so there's no bank looking to get a comp or anything... As far as I know?!

Re: Taking pics of your home for public record/sale prices??
Was he just taking pictures or could he have been there for a survey? Does your buyer need/want an update survey of the property? Sometimes the buyer's lawyer advises this, and orders a survey, but they can't really make an appointment as they don't schedule a specific day/time. A surveyor would need to get into the yard, obviously.
But ideally, you'd know that a surveyor would be coming by at some point, and the guy doing the survey would identify himself!

I meant for other buyers in the area. For ex. I had our realtor pull local recent comps when we were trying to figure out what we wanted to offer on our home. But if you haven't closed yet I guess that isn't the case. Very odd
