Palette Expander

I'm curious if anyone's child has had a Palette Expander and any feedback on how they adjusted to it.

My DD has bottom braces already but will now be getting a Palette Expander and eventually top braces. I trust the orthodontist and I understand why she needs it, but it seem so intrusive in their mouth Chat Icon I wonder how kids adapt to it and if it is painful......

if I remember, I had one as a kid and it fits like a retainer where you just use a key to widen the width at certain intervals. My mouth was tender for the first few days but it went away and wasn't bad

Re: Palette Expander

My daughter has had one for the past two months and I have to say she adjusted right away I was actually surprised. She's very dramatic in general so I expected it to be a giant deal but it wasn't! They don't usually cement them in so she can take it out to eat sticky food and to brush it and crank it. She was even able to pick a design! I wouldnt worry the technology has advanced a lot. She has slight discomfort right after I crank it but I'm pretty sure it's more from it being slightly larger I just give her aspirin and we crank it Friday night so she has the weekend to adjust.

My daughter had one and adjusted to it rather quickly.

My DD has one since last few months. It hurt little with rhe first few turns but so does my older DDs braces each month when they are adjusted. She wouldnt eat much the first few days.

The main issue DD has with expander is she cant always eat properly and food gets stuck. She has to sort of "slurp" the food to get it out and she hates it!

I had one for a long time back in jr high/high. Mine was permanent and I went to the orthodontist for adjustments. I definitely recall discomfort immediately afterwards and for a few days following.

I'm a hygienist and had the removable as a kid. My 9 year old has a palatial and mandibular removable since she's 7. I don't care for the permanent ones. I find they are terrible to keep clean. My daughter only wear hers at night because with so much reading during the day at school, it gives her a bad lisp. They are working amazingly though. She would have had several impacted permanent teeth without it.

Update: DD had the permanent type palette expander placed on Friday. There was very little discomfort and she only seems uncomfortable for a short time after cranking it at night. It is very annoying for her to eat with and keep clean but she is adjusting. Her speech was pretty bad at first and they said it takes a week to get back to normal, she has made good improvement over the weekend. Luckily she thinks it is funny and has no embarrassment going to school today LOL
