stain on windows coming off
We have stained wood windows, windowsills, mouldings, and doors. Some things look polyurethaned. The windows and windowsills do not. Not sure if it has worn off or was never done. Stain will rub off on a dust cloth. This always bothered me, but now DD has started playing at the window and I don't like her touching it. This is a rental so hoping for an easy fix. If it were my place, I would paint everything white, but we can't. What would need to be done to seal in the stain?

A quick coat or two of clear-coat. Polyurethane, or what I use in my entire house: http://www.ecosafetyproducts.com/Concrete-Sealer-Wood-Sealer-s/18.htm
Soy based, no VOCs, and it holds up extremely well. I've had it on my stair railing for 6+ years, and it's still in good shape, even with the constant abrasion and rubbing while going up and down the stairs.

Mention it to your landlord that your concerned for DC and you would like something to be done. If they are not willing to do anything, offer to paint or poly but that you will take the cost off your rent.

Thanks. They are close family and if we need money for it, I'm sure they will pay. We can't paint because they like the stain look. I'd rather not do full restaining right now with 2 LO's.

Great! Thank you! Do you think I would need to do anything to prepare the area first?

I would just make sure there is nothing that is flaking off, or loose (it sounds like there isn't from what you wrote), then make sure it's clean and dust and oil free. After that, just put on a couple of coats, according to the directions. Nothing fancy.

stain on windows coming off
The previous owner of my house had a dog which scratched alot of the sills and left the windows open alot so I had similar problems with fading and peeling (water damage?). I lightly sanded, vacuumed, wiped down and then used a rag with wipe on poly. Do it with the windows open but the smell doesn't linger for too long.
