Mother's Day?

For those that are due at the very end of April/early May, what are you planning on doing for Mother's Day? Obviously it will be amazing to have a newborn for Mother's Day (this is going to be my first child so I'm super excited!), but are you still planning on spending the day with family? My brother (and his wife and children) and myself and hubby usually take my mom out to brunch at a local restaurant, but that won't happen this year due to me having a very young newborn. Would you feel comfortable taking a newborn to a family member's house (like my mom's or brother's) for breakfast or lunch? Or would you want to be cautious and likely stay home with baby and DH? Not sure if it matters but brother's kids are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2......

Mother's Day?

DD was born in Early March and we took her out from the very beginning. She was fine! Mother's Day was at my house with everyone and she was 2 months old. But prior to that we went out for Easter, Passover, family visits, anything!

I'm not sure if I'm overreacting or just being a "1st time Mom" but I'm due on Tuesday and the doctor will let me go one week after my due date before we talk induction -- this means the baby could be anywhere from 2 weeks old to like 5 days old on Mother's Day. Does this change your opinion on taking her to a family member's house with young children there?

Nope. Unless they're sick. And even then I would just make sure that they didn't go near the baby. We took DD to the mall at 9 days old. She was at the peds office among sick kids at 3 days old for her first well visit. Heck, DH had the flu when she was born! He had a mask and barely touched Her though. She was and remained perfectly healthy til she was about 8 months old when she got her first cold.

I'm pretty lax though. You have to do what you feel comfortable with.

Mother's Day?

As long as they're not sick it's not a big deal. Plus it will provably be nice out so you can probably be outside I'm fresh air. When dd was born my niece (5 1/2 at the time) came to the hospital. And then she and my nephew (1 1/2 at the time) came over to the house.

Re: Mother's Day?

I would wait and see. My daughter was a month old and our first big outing was Palm Sunday. We brought the rock and play and she slept most of the time we were there. For the following week on Easter she was a bit more fussy so I was upstairs nursing her and comforting her for half the time. It all depends!!

You also need to wait and see how you're feeling! 5 days after giving birth I was definitely not up for going out to someones house for brunch.

First of all, see how you are feeling and if you are up for that. If the baby is 5 days old, you may not be up for all of that activity yet.

If you are up for it, then yes I would go. Hopefully your family will be very cognizant that you have a newborn and keep the kids at bay and Purell the crap out of them. Plus, mother's day is usually warm enough to sit outside. It's good for you and the baby to get some fresh air. There is no reason to keep yourself holed up in your house. It's not healthy - physically or mentally.

This! I too was not ready to go out 5 days pp, nothing specifically with the baby but my own recovery. I would play it by ear and if you can make it, it's a bonus but if you plan something at home for you DH and the baby, it will definitely be special no matter what!

Re: Mother's Day?

For me I would bring the baby out to other family members house right away. But it was me that was not ready to move around. I had a c-section and it was very rough for me to get around for the first 2 weeks. I would rather order in food and allow visitors to come over my place then have to get up and out.

I will have DD a few weeks before Father's Day. We will be going to my parents house for the day and there will be a lot of people there. I'm not worried about it. But this is also my 2nd. With my 1st I was probably more cautious.

Mother's Day?

I took my DD out to breakfast the day after we got out of the hospital. I had a c-secton. Just kept her in the car seat covered up and didn't let anyone too close. She was fine.

Re: Mother's Day?

I had my daughter April 29th and went out to a restaurant when she was 9 days old for a Mother's Day brunch. She slept in the carseat the entire time and I made sure she was covered to attempt to protect her from any "germs". Plus she was right next to me the whole time. It was fine! It was also nice to get out for a couple hours. :) I would not hesitate to go to a family member's house either, that may be a better idea for you if you are worried. Have fun and enjoy the day!

Re: Mother's Day?

I will be coming home from the hospital (after a section) a few days before Mother's Day so this Sunday, me, my mom and my sister in law are going out for a Mother's Day brunch and celebrating a little early. On the day of, we will be staying home and probably be visited by my parents and DH's.

Re: Mother's Day?

DD was born just before Easter. I allowed my Aunt, Uncle and cousins over after they had dinner with a larger group to visit her. But the youngest is 23. Then we did dinner at my parents, just the 5 of us. I'm an only child.

Mothers Day she'll be about a month and a half. We are going to my in-laws in NJ but again no kids as she's the first grandchild.

So far I've kept children away from her. Particularly school aged children. Was hoping to keep that up until her 2 month shots, but it will be impossible Memorial Day weekend. She'll get her shots the Tuesday after Memorial Day.

Re: Mother's Day?

On the actual day, we will probably be home not doing anything special. My mom works weekends anyway & we don't have much other family around at all. The new baby will only be about a week old probably... or if I end up going late & being induced it's possible I could still be in the hospital.
