Is there something I'm missing (olas)
In the last 7 years or so I've applied to around 80 job postings on olas. I've had teachers (that have been teaching 25+ years) look over resume/cover letters. They all say it's good. I've never once gotten an interview through Olas! How do I get noticed on olas???

OLAS is where resumes go to die. Some people have luck on there, I haven't and neither have my other teacher friends. I've been a perm sub for a long time, but this was back when blitzing out resumes was the norm.

I know I'm in the most flooded area. I'm elementary and special Ed. It sucks! I finished my masters 7 years ago and I've worked as a sub, TA and for a few different agency's. I recently took off about 16 months when dd was born, but I was hoping things would change! I guess not.

Is there something I'm missing (olas)
I got two interviews through there but that was it! I found that the times I got called for those interviews were when I just happened to come across this job right as it was posted, so I was probably one of the first to apply. Last year, I would check multiple times daily- So if something got posted, I noticed pretty quickly.... I would look at the NY times, though. They have some good LI postings in there

The NY Times is better. Sending your resume directly to the districts is better. Knowing someone who works in a district and who can hand deliver your resume to an administrator is best.

All of this, yes. Also, there are districts that don't go through OLASJOBS and you can make yourself a list of districts you're willing to go to and check their websites, too.
There is a job in DH building, and his principal said there were 1304 applicants for that 1 job

ITA with this! I think you need to know someone in the district or sub there so that your resume gets seen.

That's insane! And that's why I'm close to giving up after 7 years of trying but I've never given up on anything so it's really hard!

Do you have your professional certification or other full time experience? I found that this was helpful. And you need very job specific cover letters. I agree it is hard to get noticed on olas but I found having job related experience helps. Or no shame in working for the city. I ended up getting hired by a really nice school in queens. I'd like to work closer but I like my school.

I have one more year left and then I can apply for my professional. You think it helps to have your professional over the initial??
I would work in the city, and I started the process a few years back, but we ended up buying a house pretty far out east. I have a 10 week old and an almost 3 year old. With travel time I probably wouldn't have more than an hour a day with them at home. I want to be in a school bad, but it's also not worth it to me to miss that much time in my dc's young lives.

I am a speech therapist it and I think it definitely helped when I had my permanent certification with some full time experience. I still think OLAS is kinda like a black hole, but not 100% impossible. I spent 5 years trying to leave my old job before I got my current position. Don't give up. You never know what will happen. I do think the competition is fierce though and having experience or showing that you are a good fit for the position is crucial.

Re: Is there something I'm missing (olas)
They do not offer "permanent" certification anymore.
Have you considered getting on per-diem sub lists? The more you get on the more exposure you will get.
Baldwin just posted and their rate of pay is $160 per day. So did Half Hollow Hills and they pay $130.
