Packing boxes
I look for free boxes when I can.
I often get my local market to save egg crates/boxes for me, so do other people as sometimes they are hard to get. Egg crates/boxes are large, very sturdy and have handle hole cut outs on the end to lift them with. Usually I will be told when to pick them up. I have gotten anywhere between six and a dozen at a time.
I also get boxes from liquor stores as they are sturdy too. One liquor store allows people to simply take them out of its outdoor recycling storage area, but I always ask first.

Re: Packing boxes
call your local old navy
tell them you would like them to hold some boxes for you on their delivery days. I always called the morning of about an hour before the store opens, this way they dont put them in the dumpster.
they are a good size, free and broken down already.
when i moved I got probably 90% of my boxes from them.

Re: Packing boxes
Call your local schools! Schools get shipments of all kinds of things: books, copy paper, etc. Getting boxes from grocery stores kind of skeeved me.
